The Family Finder test will show genetic relationships starting with you and
go back for 5 or 6 generations on both your maternal and paternal lines.
This would include males or females. I have had one match with a confirmed
8th cousin on one of my lines. That is rare though... So you may get
matches to cousins you are unaware of and are not on your pedigree/Ancestor
chart.
Y-DNA only covers your paternal line (males) and would match with male
cousins, uncles, grandfathers...

I have another question. It was recomended to go to family finder. What I
read
there, says it will give you information to your great great grandparents.
That
is all well and good, except Roland is my great great grandfather. Is it
worth
the money to still get the test?

I have been lurking on this as well. I have a 35 of 37 to Capt. Thomas
Carter, but have found no succeeding CARTERs to mine. Only by chance there
is a relation to Capt. Thomas Carter in my mother's family which would only
tell me that my mother had Carters that were related to my father's
Carter's.

Holly, I'm following along with this discussion. I wonder if you or Mike
could say more about what constitutes a strong match with a non-Carter
surname?
Thank you.
