"It doesn't matter how good the test is; if you test with one company and your
cousin tests with a different company, you are not going to find each other." TRUE
if you are ONLY using the search tools at 23andme or FTDNA and NOT TRUE if you are using a
third party program to compare results.
There are third party websites where you can upload your Y-DNA results and FF or 23andme
raw data and compare results. Several links for comparison of DNA data from different
companies come to mind:
http://www.ysearch.org/ Upload your Y-DNA results from your FTDNA personal page or type
them in if you tested with a different company
http://www.gedmatch.com/entry_relationship_search.php
http://gedmatch.com/
http://www.mitosearch.org/ Upload your mtDNA results
http://snpology.com/ HIR Search (Half-Identical Regions) by Leon Kull which is for
23andme or FF data
Right now the Y-results table for the Carter DNA project is limited to FTDNA Y-DNA
tests.... as we are using the FTDNA Y-DNA public database.... An alternative would be to
use FTDNA as the test company and then move the results to an independent web site. Then
you could post Y-DNA results from different companies. Post pedigrees and note whether a
family has Y-DNA, Family Finder, 23andme or Mtdna tested. You could also add links to
family websites. That would be my choice; however, I am a Co-Administrator and not the
Administrator of the Carter Y-DNA project.

It still comes down to the popularity game. You are only going to get a match if the
company has your cousin in their database. It doesn't matter how good the test is; if
you test with one company and your cousin tests with a different company, you are not
going to find each other.

administrator. As administrator I can see the FF tests and run results in my 5 DNA
projects I administer/co-administer as a result I have had contact with satisfied
customers of both companies. I have actually used both report generators for both Family
Finder and 23andme -- Not a scientific sampling and it is subjective I admit. That being
said about 90 percent of genealogists test with FTDNA.... and the Carter-DNA project is
aligned with FTDNA. The two tests have different functions with 23andme having the medical
reporting. That is why I added the independent review link. You may want to both reports
and it is your $$.
