Hi Bette,
You may find distant relatives through one of the autosomal testing
services. (Take a look at the review sites that Mike Terry recommended.
Apparently
23andMe.com has the largest database.) I've also had some
amazing luck finding distant cousins with the message boards at
Genforum.com. Sometimes a fourth cousin will turn up with information that
you will never find in any other way.
Best,
Kathryn

Would it be worthwhile to upgrade my male cousin's test from 37
to 67? I
had no luck connecting to Carters - A variety of names but no Carter
names. I understand the possiblities of a non-parental event. My cousin
that tested was the grandson of my mother's brother. He is the last
surviving male of this line. I am sure about the relationship of my
mother's brother and the brother's son being a biological son.
My lack of Carter connections is troubling.
So... perhaps I can find a connection with this info. My oldest
connection is Phineas L. Carter b. 1814 New Richmond, OH to (parents names
unknown), but a later census say parents Chester County, PA. He married
Nancy (Caroline) Edwards apx. 1838 or 1839 her parents were from NJ
They had several children mine is James L. Carter B. 1839 or 1840 Clermont
County, Tate Township OH he married Cynthia West b. 1841 Bethel OH They
married 1862. They had several children only 2 males lived to adulthood
mine Clare Carter b. 1882 (Iowa) and Louis b. 1873 who died in his 30's --
had a son Harold (wife Zetta Eaton remarried a Botkin?)
Clare had 3 children 2 girls and 1 male - the descendent of the male was
who I had tested.
Any guidance or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you Bette
