Additional markers will not make you have any more matches if you are not currently
matching anyone with a Y-DNA test.
From my personal experience I did not have a match on one of my Y-DNA
Atests for an Uncle for two years and my wife did not have a test on her brother's
Y-DNA for 5 years. Now she has three 67 marker matches. So I must say patience is in
order.
Just think of your Y-DNA test or other test as book in a library that someone may pick up
one day [as a match].
The only advantage to upgrading now is the savings that may result so more markers will be
there when you do have a match. Another reason is in some cases the oldest member of the
family has tested and they may not always be around to do give additional DNA for testing
if required.... On my own FF test I had to resubmit my DNA.
Sometimes the additional markers will help separate out families that are in a group.
If you are not getting matches with Y-DNA the Family Finder test might be an option for a
female in your Carter line and they might match another Carter who has autosomal tested
even though you currently may not have a Y-DNA match on your paternal Carter line.

Could the additional 30 markers cause a match where none existed at the first 37?

I think the part that a lot of people miss is that an upgrade from 37 Markers to 67
Markers is just that -- an upgrade. It means 30 new Markers are added to the original 37
Markers. It's not an entirely new set of 67 Markers.
37 + 30 = 67
If the original 37 Markers don't give a match the first time around, they are still
not going to match in the future, no matter how many additional Markers are tested.

Thank you Holly for this valuable information, I had not thought of it that
way.
