I, too, second or third, etc. that. It has been interesting. I erred in
getting the
Ancestry.com DNA test. Unfortunately, they don't send you the
"real" results. All I have received is an ethnic grouping -- and that is on
their website!! That really wasn't a surprise.
Meanwhile, I'm still stumped on the parentage of William Carter b. ca. 1811
in GA who supposedly married a Martha Skinner b. ca. 1815 in GA. Anyone out
there familiar with the line?

Howdy,
I second Dale's comment.
Your e-mail lead to some good discussion and comments, which this board
needed. Most activity we've seen in awhile...and that is good!
Thanks,

I would call you a real Carter. That why I don't like the word REAL.
I don't think we should start having rules about the name or how the
person got it. That is why we have DNA's made, to help put us in the
right family units.

I am not a "real" Carter. Well my 4th G Grandmother was but she had 5
children out of wedlock (1820's). My DNA claims that I am a Llewellyn.

Dale,
Your response makes me feel better. It's so frustrating - My male
cousin was nice enough to do the y-dna test at the 37 level. There are
many matches, but no one with a Carter name or even (to their
knowledge in the genealogy). I'd hope to use this method to help get
some information, but seems like that hasn't. Many of his matches have
the same last name, but just not the Carter name.

Lots of Carters don't match any other Carters. Each of those groupings
of Carters on the website don't match other Carters. Carter is an
occupational name, so unrelated people of that occupation from all
over the British Isles used the name as surnames came into use. That's
why there are some many different groups of Carters.
You could also say that none of the other Carters match our group
either, so maybe they aren't "real" Carters.
Of course, a so-called non-parental event may have occurred. It can't
be proven or disproven without further information.

Ha, well, I think that we might be 'something else' like 'Hudson or
French'
because our DNA doesn't match any other Carters.
Probably a female Carter that had an affair, or a woman who got
pregnant out of wedlock and a Carter married her and thus the name.
