I think about half the people from the Old South with the
surname Carter somewhere in their family tree (which is just
about everybody from the Old South) have claimed to be kin
to General Robert E. Lee.
I think it is fairly well accepted that the Carter line for
General Lee goes like this:
1 - Robert "King" Carter
2 - John "Secretary" Carter of Corotoman Plantation
3 - Charles Carter of Shirley Plantation
4 - Anne Hill Carter (Mrs. Henry Lee, III)
5 - Robert E. Lee
Recently I was exploring the John Carter of Watauga
line. Some researchers think there was a connection
between John Carter of Watauga and Robert "King"
Carter. But if there was a connection, the details are
not known.
On August 14, 2011, Dick Zieman posted the following:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/carter/messages/21228.html
"Dr. Barry Hayes, supported by in-depth analysis of Joe
Carter (one of two Joes) here on Genform ..... has proven
King Carter and Thomas (Sr.) Isle of Wight were first
cousins."
If this "proven" claim is correct then I would expect the
Y-DNA of the Robert "King" Carter line and the Thomas Carter
of Isle of Wight line to match.
Personally, I am skeptical of this claim. I would
like to see the Y-DNA of a well documented paternal line
descendant of Robert "King" Carter. I know, I may be
waiting a long time for that. Matching Y-DNA from well
documented descendants of two different sons of Robert
"King" Carter would be even better.
But who knows?? At this point, I sure don't.
Maybe your grandfather was right. Maybe Robert and
Thomas were cousins and maybe you are kin to General Lee.

Y-DNA (ftDNA) kit #134472, he is R1b1b2 - haplogroup R1b-04
group. I have researched our Carter's back to Duplin
Co., New Hanover Co., Craven Co., & Bertie Co., NC,
& Isle of Wight Co., VA. We descend from Thomas Carter
1648 - 1710 Nanicoke Plantation, Isle of Wight.
