The Dudley names does fit which is why I believed in the lineage from Charles to Nathaniel
initially (after all, Dudley is not a common name). Your speculation about Charles moving
west may be true. Nathaniel lived in Wilson county, TN. However, the only Charles Carter
I can locate in the appropriate time frame is in McMinn county, TN which is a long way
from Wilson county, TN.
What would help would be a list of the children of Charles Carter & Lucy Barksdale.

Of the three listed in my previous message, I think it is possible that Charles Carter
married to Lucy Barksdale was the father of Nathaniel Green Carter. I just think that the
one who died in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1827 is someone else. I don't know what
happened to your Charles Carter. He may have moved west with one of his children.
The name Dudley fits.

You've convinced me there are multiple Charles Carters who are contemporaries &
that none of the ones mention so far is my ancestor.

I don't understand "proximity". The city of Fredericksburg, Virginia is
just north of Spotsylvania County, Virginia in the northern part of the state but I
thought Charles Carter & Lucy Barksdale were married down in Charlotte County,
Virginia which is in the southern part of the state (two counties over from Pittsylvania
County, Virginia).
I'm wondering if the Charles Carter married to Betty Lewis is the same as the Charles
Carter married to Elizabeth Lewis. Betty (Bettie) was a common nickname for Elizabeth.
1 John Carter
..+ Sarah Ludlow
....2 Robert "King" Carter ( confirmed R1b-32 )
......+ Judith Armistead
........3 John Carter
..........+ Elizabeth Hill
............4 Edward Carter
..............+ Sarah Champe
................5 Charles Carter d: 1829
..................+ Elizabeth "Betty" Lewis b: 22 FEB 1765 d: 9 AUG 1830
Only this Charles Carter is reported to have died in 1829, not 1827, and said to have
died in Clarke County, Virginia.
Then there is this other Charles Carter from Pittsylvania County, Virginia who is said to
have been married to Lucy Barksdale:
( unconfirmed R1a-02 )
1 Giles Carter b: ~1634 d: ~1699
..+ Hannah ( disputed original surname )
....2 Theodorick Carter
......+ Elizabeth ( disputed original surname ) d: ~1751
........3 Theodorick Carter b: ~1713
..........+ Anne Waddill
............4 Theodorick (III) Carter b: ~1747 d: ~1805
..............+ Judith Cunningham or Miss Townes
................5 Charles Carter b: ~1772
..................+ Lucy Barksdale
The Charles Carter who died in 1827 in Fredericksburg is a mystery to me.

(Saturday, 26 May 1827), p. 3. col. 3). I have assumed the obituary is for the Charles
Carter who married Lucy Barksdale based on the proximity of Charles' death place to
the locale of his marriage to Lucy.

date of the Charles Carter who married Berry Lewis?
