I just want to throw my 2 cents in on my opinion of group DNA projects.
We also paid to have a Carter cousin do the DNA, since my husband is a
'Wells', but his mother was a Carter. So we had her nephew do the DNA.
It helped to a certain point. We were stuck on Bailey Carter in Virginia
about 1750, and you know how many Carter lines are in Virginia. Probably a
hundred. It did help me figure out which line of Carters to concentrate on
because we have several exact matches...even at 67 markers. But, I still
can't find anyone in that line who named a son 'Bailey Carter'. I'm not
really discouraged, just puzzled. Maybe Bailey was a middle name??? Who
knows. But, when I have time, I do plan on working every single Carter in
that line that I can possibly trace. He has to fit in there somewhere!!
So, I don't really feel like it was a waste.
Also, I actually traced a couple of the other matches myself, once they gave
me the information. I found them all to be well researched. I know
everyone isn't quite as careful though.
We have also done the 'Wells DNA' project. When they started out, we had
to list our proof/sources we used before we submitted the markers on their
website. Not sure if they are still doing that because they have about 400
participants now. I do wish everyone would list their sources.
Kathy.

Subject: [CARTER-DNA] KIT # 88894
Anyone is welcome to look at my kit # 88894. My ancestor is CYRUS HARRISON
CARTER.
Knowing what I now know, I WOULD NOT participate in any group DNA project
because the results is only as good as the reliability of information shared
between matching groups...of which I have no definitive match and probably
never will.
I also have concerns as to the end results and disposal of the DNA samples,
what with this crazy scientific world we live in. I can imagine that someday
in the year 2035, a future descendant will tour a zoo and remark that some
creature, "looks a lot like Grandpa Carter," that being me. Anyway, at my
age, I'm a lot closer to meeting my ancestors in Heaven than trying to find
DNA links, and/or, a documented paper trail.
I figure all the Carter Clan is related, so hello to all my cousins. I wish
all of you the best of luck. I'm really not a pessimist, I'm a realist!
