I realize that it is father to son. I am saying I also have Carters on my
mother's side. So at this time I have no match to the Carters of my father.
The Carters of my mother and of my father are from possible the same line
several generations prior, so the DNA connection is there, but I have no
family connection yet back to the same root for my father as I do for my
mother.

Sorry, but I did not understand your comment at all. Y-DNA is passed only
from (biological) father to son. The Y-DNA that you have has nothing to do
with your mother's line. The Y-DNA you have came from your father. That's
basic human biology. It may be that your father and mother were cousins.
Cousin marriages were common in the past.

My kit 14463 is to Capt. Thomas Carter and traced back to my mother's side
for a close match and not my CARTER father side. We get some odd twists
from
time to time.
