Went to a Coat of Arms Seminar with the Colonial Dames XVII Century,
of
which I am South Carolina State President, today.
It was led by our National Chairperson for Coat of Arms....an interesting
thing was said....when a man married a lady with more money, etc. and a
coat
of arms that was better than his, he would take her name and her coat of
arms......so, these Carter's with the DNA who can't match, I just wonder
if
this is what happened to us? Not necessarily for Coat of Arms, but
changed
'his' name to hers and that's why our Carter DNA is so hard to
trace.....we
probably have mentioned this before, but thought it was good to think
about
it again.....Oh, and pics are great. Thanks.

It goes back to the reason coats of arms were created in the first
place --
that is, the days when warriors wore armor that covered their faces. They
didn't necessarily wear the armor to disguise who they were but it
achieved
that purpose. Today soldiers (and police officers, etc.) in uniform
generally wear name tags but back 800 years ago most people couldn't read.
Using "Hello, My Name is..." tags would have been useless. So they
started
using colors and images on the "coat" worn over the armor so people could
tell who was who. If a whole bunch of people are using the same "logo"
then
the goal of identifying a specific person is lost. Imagine watching a
football game where every player on the field was wearing the same number
and name on his jersey.
Then along came the beer mug manufacturers who wanted to make more money.
