Hi, David,
Thanks for the reply. You are one of the three "hints" that I have found that
point towards Giles Carter of Henrico possibly being "R1a".
Cousin marriages were not uncommon in the 1700's and early 1800's. I have several
Carter-Carter cousin marriages in my own Carter family (which is "Q"). It is
possible that the husband and wife in your Carter-Carter marriage in Kentucky were
cousins. Other than yourself, the other two members (Mankin and Miller) listed on The
Carter Society website as being descendants of "Giles Carter I of Henrico
County" are from the famous 1756 marriage of Charles Carter of Cumberland &
Judith Carter of Lickinghole (Rev. William Douglas Register). This Charles Carter was a
grandson of Thomas Carter, Sr. of Goochland County, Virginia.
(By the way, the information on The Carter Society website is incorrect. The Judith
Carter who married Charles Carter was not a daughter of Edward Carter. The Judith Carter
who was a daughter of Edward Carter was married to David Webster. The Judith Carter who
married her cousin Charles Carter was a daughter of Thomas Carter, Jr. All of these
Carter family members were of the Y-DNA "Q" line.)
But "possibly cousins" isn't proof that the husband and wife in your
Kentucky Carter-Carter marriage were really cousins. Carter is a popular surname so it is
also possible that the husband and wife in this Carter-Carter marriage were from two
different Carter families.
The second "hint" is Kit # 16689. I have emailed with Vic Carter [
"R1a" ] and he wrote that several researchers have followed the paper trail for
his Carter line and while they were never able to make an actual connection, it was their
conclusion that his Carter line was probably from Giles Carter of Henrico. But
"probably" isn't proof.
The third "hint" is Kit # 21406 [ Braxton Carter - "R1a" ]. In the
early 1800's, Braxton Carter lived in Williamson County, Tennessee -- the same county
where known descendants of Giles Carter were living. Braxton Carter named a son Peyton
which brings to mind the author Peyton F. Carter who has traced his line back to Giles
Carter of Henrico. Peyton F. Carter's line includes Waddill Carter who was a brother
of Robert Carter and Francis Watkins Carter who moved to Williamson County, Tennessee.
But geographical proximity and shared forenames is not proof.
It could be just a coincidence that we have known descendants of Giles Carter living near
"R1a" Carters in both Kentucky and Tennessee. It could be that Giles Carter was
really Y-DNA "Q" as indicated by the claim on The Carter Society website that
Thomas Carter, Sr. of Goochland County, Virginia (who was Y-DNA "Q" ) was a 3rd
"previously unknown" son of Giles Carter of Henrico.

Holly. my ggg grandmother Susannah Carter was a descendant of Giles Carter. I have not
been able to identify her husband. She had three sons and the oldest was Allen my gg
grandfather, Logan, and Alexander. I am R1a.

Hello,
I am interested in communicating with others who are researching Carter lines that are
"R1a", "R1a1", or "Q".
