Dear John,
Looking at the results chart at
http://www.carter-cousins.org/results/haplogroup_R1b.htm
I don't see that expanding to more markers with FTDNA is likely to lead you to any new
discoveries within your group.
Have you considered testing with 23andMe?
https://www.23andme.com/
Their test is very different--you'll get your Y chromosome haplotype, plus a vast
amount of other information, but you won't get the STR data that FTDNA checks. Their
current price is $99 plus $9 a month for one year.
Take a look at their "Relative Finder" tool (and an independent review from DNA
Testing Adviser).
https://www.23andme.com/ancestry/relfinder/
http://www.dna-testing-adviser.com/Relative-Finder.html
I am not connected in any way to any of the DNA testing companies--please don't think
I'm trying to solicit business for them. Just looking at all the possible sources of
information.
Best,
Kathryn

is there were several Carter lines in the part of VA where my great
grandfather was. Some came from PA as or with the Quakers and some came from
the tidewater area of VA. Locking down which group and been a struggle.

I see two kits in your group who have tested beyond 37 Markers: 76388,
162741
If you expand beyond 37 Markers, you may be able to clarify your
relationship with these two kits. I don't know if that is something that is
of interest to you.
