He's not my ancestor. He's not even in my Carter line. But I have certainly seen
the name around a lot. I don't know if you know about this post from 2009:

After the Robert "King" Carter line, the Capt. Thomas Carter & Katherine
Dale line is probably the most often incorrectly claimed Carter line and it is the line
that is the primary claim to fame for The Carter Society. That's not to say that
errors haven't been made with these old and famous lines. The Capt. Thomas Carter
& Katherine Dale line is Y-DNA Haplogroup "R1b" Group 2. It's one of
the two of the big five where the Y-DNA has been established.
- Capt. Thomas Carter & Katherine Dale
- Henry Skipworth Carter & Anne Harris
- John Carter & Susannah Merriman Payne
- William Merriman Carter (Sr.) & Frances Leftwich
- William Merriman Carter (Jr.) & Jane Bugg Taylor
They have been claiming him for almost 100 years. (The Miller book was published in
1912.) You are going to need some very strong evidence of some kind to take him away from
them.

Hi folks,
Does anyone have this Carter ancestor:
William Merriman Carter
B: 30 Jan 1769 Virginia
M: 1809 Smith Co TN( Jane Bugg Taylor)
D: 7 Feb 1857 Giles Co. TN
This line is linked to all three surnames I may be connected to according to familytree

Thanks!
