I have not found mtDNA tests to be as useful in determining the paternal lines; however,
they might be useful if you have unknown siblings.... If mtDNA (males and females) is
viewed in combination with Y-DNA (males) and FF data (males and females) for
known/unknown genetic cousins/relatives it might suggest clues for relationships between
families.
Remember on FF, one cousin, uncle or aunt, grandparent, parent may receive a larger
segment or no segment of DNA from earlier lines as you go back in time. In the case of no
paper trail or unknown females in your pedigree it is really a "crap shoot"...
Considering the price of gas it is cheaper than driving across the coast to a court house
and coming up dry..... just sayin' :)

I'm in the same situation. My brother (not a surname Carter) matched with one person
after the y-dna test. I took the family finder dna thinking it would give me some matches
I have some, but none with any surname I have in my lines. And, most are 3rd distant or
remotes. My carter Cousin took the y-dna for the Carter side and has many many close
matches, but none with the Carter surname or any other surnames that are in the lines I
have found.
As far as the mtdna I don't know if or how that would give me any more info??

Could people weigh in on how to decide next steps to take to make the most out of DNA
testing dollars?
I've had a male relative do YDNA 67 testing, and the results are still ungrouped. I
haven't been tested. What's the next best step if I'm looking for data
that's useful for genealogy. Family Finder? yDNA for a another member of the family?
Thank you for helping this newbie!
