Holly is correct in her answer... "So it seems sometimes they can use the original
DNA sample for additional testing but sometimes can't."
From my experience, FTDNA will always send send a new DNA Kit for
Family Finder tests even if you have already Y-DNA or MtDNA tested.
Ancestry DNA and FTDNA are two different companies who both do DNA testing. Some of their
reports are incompatible and results from one company do not show up in matches with the
other company unless you pay a transfer/conversion fee.

Subject: Upgrades & DNA Samples
I think Family Tree DNA keeps DNA samples for something like 20 or 25 years but when I
tried to have my father's Y-DNA upgraded to more Markers after only 5 years they told
me they needed a new sample. So it seems sometimes they can use the original DNA sample
for additional testing but sometimes can't.

Mike,
Since I know very little about the DNA testing - but I have done both the
12 marker and the 25 marker tests with a direct male Carter
descendant....what would you suggest to further test to help us further our
line? It's kit # 14743. Do we ever have to take anymore DNA from my donor
because he is getting up there in age? I just got a notice from Ancestry
this morning about further testing.
Thank You,
Sherry
