The convention for most Y-DNA projects recently has been to move toward subgroup names
that have something to do with the Haplogroup name.... When a group of individuals have at
least 25 marker matches we create a lineage group and we give them a name. For R1b we
started with 1 the next group is 2, then 3 and so forth...
Now, all people who are in a certain haplogroup are related; however, the relationship may
be more recent in what we call a genealogical time frame or it may before surnames even
existed. The closer the match the more recent the genealogical time frame for the
relationship.
We also now have what the call SNP testing which will expand the haplotype and you will
see more letters and numbers with the haplogroup. Once anyone in the group has done the
deep clade testing everyone in that group with similar numbers are also the expanded
Haplogroup or type.
Hope this helps.... You will see over time the names for some Phylogenetic trees have
changed in the field i.e. I1a now is I1 I1b is now I2a and so forth. When the Carter DNA
project first started you have have seen some of the earlier names utilized...
