Sorry, I don't know of any archived documents. The only information I have seen on
this topic is what is posted on Dick Zieman's website:

William Tatham and the Culture of Tobacco, by G. Melvin Herndon: [see next for errors]
"Tatham's father [of Lancaster] sent him to a branch ** of Carter and
Trent on the James
River in Amherst Co. "to be brought up in the commercial pursuits of the
tobacco trade".
"Tatham removed to the western frontier in search of adventure and
fortune ...
John Carter, a good friend and a relative of his former employer was already
well
established in the Tennessee country." Per his own notes, Tatham arrived
in 1769.

According to Dick's website, the Carter of "Carter and Trent Co." was Edward
Carter, son of John Carter & Elizabeth Hill. Or as Dick calls him "Edward Hill
Carter of Blenheim".
Portraits of John Carter & Elizabeth Hill can be found on the Shirley Plantation
website:

Dick has John Carter of Watauga listed as a grandson of Robert "King" Carter by
his son John and an unknown mother which would make John Carter of Watauga a half-brother
to Edward but I do not agree with that. The Y-DNA Haplogroup of John Carter of Watauga
has been established as "E". The Y-DNA Haplogroup of Robert "King"
Carter is still disputed but I do not think it was "E".
There has been endless speculation about the relationship between John Carter of Watauga
and Robert "King" Carter. In my opinion, no one has been able to make a good
case for defining their relationship.

Are any of the documents pertaining to the Carter and Trent Trading Company
archived anywhere? If they are, I would like to find out if they provide
any information about who the employees and customers of the firm were.
