The name "Gayland." I think I've emailed this list before on this subject
not too long ago. That was my father's name. His grandmother's name was Jane
(Jennie) Carter b. 1874 Sumner County, TN. My family is the Harris Carter,
son of Charles Carter of Halifax County, NC, b. abt 1782. Charles Carter
left a Will in Halfax County, NC, 16 August 1810 (C-047-80001, Vol 3, pg
510) wherein his children are named: Nancy Carter, Elizabeth Tuttle, Polly
Carter, Deliah Carter, Sally Carter, Harry Carter, Gideon Carter and Joseph
Carter. I believe that all three sons moved to TN. The Tuttles are found in
Westmoreland, Sumner County, TN, and some other family names also from
Halifax County, NC.
My Carters mostly moved across the state line to Allen County, KY, from TN.
Some of their descendants might have moved to MS and my Braswell family
moved from Allen County, KY, to MO and then to TX. My Carter and Braswell
families did go back and forth between KY/TN and TX.
What county in TX was your Gayland Carter b. 1941 born? He would have been a
generation younger than my father, Gayland Braswell b. 1922, whose mother
was Lela Malone b. AL, whose family was from GA. She moved from AL to Haskel
County, TX, around 1908. Any connection to the Malone family? I don't have
any knowledge of any of my family moving to MS. When did your Carter family
arrive in TX and what counties?
I think Harris Carter's father is probably one of the early Halifax County,
NC, Carters, there about 1750. It looks to me there may be more than one
line of Carters there, however.
I have not yet made contact with a male Carter from my family group who has
participated in the yDNA project. Maybe one will read this email and
contact me. I was hoping that maybe the yDNA project would connect my
Carters with another Carter family.

Hello,
My lineage also might come from Halifax, Co. NC. What Hapolgroup does your
line come from. I am of J2 which is extremely rare in The U.S. We are at a
deadend but have strong data from Cumberland and Halifax counties.

Gayland Carter b 1941, s/o Forrest Bland Carter 1911-2006, s/o Bedford
Forrest Carter 1888-1963, s/o David Edmond Carter 1852-1941. I do not know
where the name Gayland came from, however my Carter line did come in from
North Carolina. Our ancestor David Carter was in the 1790 Duplin Co., NC
census, and he was in Washington Co., GA by the 1810 census, and by 1820 he
was in Hickman Co., TN, 1830 Perry Co., TN and in Tishomingo Co., MS by 1840
census. He had a land grant in Hickman Co., TN on 15 Jan 1819. They were
both in TN about the same time. Helen

My father's name was Gayland. His grandmother was Janie Carter, but from
Sumner and Wilson Counties, TN, and Allen County, KY. Our family comes from
Harris Carter in Halifax County, NC, into TN by about 1822. We don't see
many men with the first name of Gayland. I just wonder if we have a
connection. I was named after my father.
