Subject: Re: [CARTER-DNA] Carters in GA/AL?
There were many, many, many different Carter families in Georgia in the
early 1800's who had members who then moved on to Alabama. This was one of
the typical migration paths followed by many European descendants as they
expanded across North America.
The Carter surname is primarily English in origin -- Carter: one who drives
a cart. A primary ship route was between England and Virginia. A lot of
American Carter families say they are "from Virginia" because Virginia is
where the ships landed.
>From Virginia the European descendants generally moved westward or south
and then westward. The typical southern route was:
Virginia
North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Alabama
Mississippi
Louisiana
Texas
Holly, Mike, or anyone else,
Has anyone run across Carters who were in GA in the early 1800's and then
moved to AL in the mid-30's or 40's?

According to the Y-DNA test results that we have so far, there were at least two different Carter families living in early Carter County, Tennessee. Both of them married into the Taylor family. John Carter "of Watauga" married Elizabeth Taylor and Francis Carter married Elizabeth's niece, Margaret Taylor.
Sorry, but I don't know who you are talking about regarding Greene County, Tennessee.

Kit # 183555 is in Carter group I-07 which seems to be Haplogroup "I". Currently there are five members in Carter group I-07:
183555 Charles Carter 1780 Edgefield SC d TN 1851
81178 Wesley D. Carter, b.c. 1807, SC
31360 Robert N. Carter 1816 SC - 1882 m Nancy Rogers
62560 James R. Carter b 1824 IL m Harriet McCreary
66484 William A Carter b 1895 IL
Currently, these other four Kits are the only other Kits that are a match with your Kit # 183555. The common Carter ancestor of these five Kits in Carter group I-07 is not known at this time. The common Carter ancestor was not Jacob Carter of Colleton County, South Carolina. That group is group I-03, not group I-07.
Please note: There is a difference between the Haplogroup and the Carter group. The "Haplogroup" is an industry standard. The Carter "group" is specific to this one Carter Surname Project at Family Tree DNA.

No. You can't just look at the Haplogroup. You must also check the Markers.

It looks like my long version never made it through the list server. The long version has lots of URLs in it so it probably got blocked by a spam filter.
Pres. Jimmy Carter is *not* a descendant of Thomas Carter, Sr. "of Barford" of Lancaster County, Virginia (wife Katherine Dale).
Pres. Jimmy Carter is a descendant of Thomas Carter, Jr. of Isle of Wight County, Virginia (wife Magdalene Moore) (son of Thomas Carter, Sr. & Elinor Cooke).
There were lots of men with the name Thomas Carter who lived in colonial Virginia. It is very easy to get them confused and many people have.

For most of us, digging up dead bodies and testing the DNA is not an option. For most of us, our only DNA testing option is to test living people.
Triangulation is the process of identifying an unknown point by using two known points and directions. Remember the rule from geometry; three non-linear points form a triangle.
With Y-DNA we always know the direction; Y-DNA is passed from biological father to biological son. The challenge is to find two men with the same direct paternal line ancestor.
The rule of Y-DNA triangulation is that you have to have matching Y-DNA from documented descendants of two documented sons to confirm the father.
The biggest "gotcha" risk with this rule is the case where a man marries a woman who has two sons from a previous marriage and the second husband adopts the two boys so they have his surname. In this case, it can look like the second husband has the Y-DNA of the first husband.
My mother was a Carter and I had my cousin's Y-DNA kit #134472 done in 2008, and in 2011 I had the markers completed to 67 markers. Gayland Eugene Carter's line is from Thomas Carter, of Isle of Wight Co., VA, the same as President Carter's line. Gayland is R1b1a2 - shorthand: R-M269, we descend as;
Thomas Carter (1650 - 1710)
is our 8th great grandfather
Edward Carter (1673 - 1730)
son of Thomas Carter
John Carter (1700 - 1740)
son of Edward Carter
Solomon Carter (1729 - 1809)
son of John Carter
David Carter (1761 - 1840)
son of Solomon Carter
John T Carter (1800 - 1880)
son of David Carter
Solomon Carter (1822 - 1895)
son of John T Carter
David Edmond Carter (1853 - 1941)
son of Solomon Carter
Kindred Carter (c. 1750-1800) came to Georgia from the Bertie-Edgecombe-Hertford area of northeastern North Carolina where his family had lived for several generations. He was of the 5th generation in descent from Thomas Carter, Sr. who came in 1637 from England to Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Thomas Carter's only known child was Thomas, Jr., who married Magdalene Moore
and left a will in 1710. In that will, Thomas, Jr. did not name all of his children, but Moore Carter (c. 1680-1741) who married Jane and moved to Bertie County, North Carolina, is believed to have been his son. Moore left a will naming a son Isaac who married Ruth and died after 1790. Isaac and Ruth were the parents of Kindred and James, among others.
ANCESTRY OF PRESIDENT CARTER
Jimmy Carter is a Georgian with deep roots in his native state, being the seventh generation Carter to live in Georgia. The information detailed here is taken from an article in Georgia Life (Winter, 1976, pp. 40 ff.) by Kenneth H. Thomas.

What do you mean by Y-DNA triangulation?
Thank you.

Holly, since my family has the haplo I , then they would be from I-03 :
Jacob Carter of Colleton Co, SC ?? Really, all I know it just "I" not
"I-03"...........thank you for posting this data. I have been looking for
"Charles b 1760 SC", so maybe Charles is a son? of Jacob.........

I cannot comment on Y-DNA tests due to confidentiality; however, here is the
Jimmy Carter Library link which shows the family ancestry...
http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.gov/documents/jec/genealog.phtml
This is a link to Jeff Carters book... I own a copy and the word DNA is not
in it. It does indicate he believes his Carter family resides for a time
in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

I see that Kit # 203168 is not "I", that kit claims Capt. Thomas Carter.

I do not think this assumed connection is correct based on Y-DNA marker
results: See Y-DNA results for three SEPARATE groups R1b-02, R1b-04 and
R1b-32.

I will never send out a message with a one line hyperlink. If you get one I get it too and I will usually bar that email address again. It just means someone has a virus or malware on their computer that is sending emails to everyone in their address book. No need to respond to this message as it will fill up the board with non germane messages.

Another way of saying I is I (M170+) which means you are positive for
SNP M170 I suspect you are probably negative on SNPs M233, M253 and P37.2
M170+, M223-, M253-, P37.2- See the I (Eyes) in the study that are Green
meaning the did some subclade testing.
At some point FTDNA instead of listing all the letters and number
combinations for those who have subclade tested they will probably move to
just stating the terminal SNP for which you are positive which would be M170
All the the plain I (eye) are I-M170
Hope this helps you out..

No one has done deep clade or sub-clade testing in this group to determine
beyone just I...... so we do not see any other letters or numbers.. I and
I1 are different haplotypes.
Log onto your personal FTDNA page
Click on Y-DNA
click on Haplotree & SNPs
Click on arrow that says YOUR MATCH
This shows the SNPs that are available for testing...
Alternatively, you can do a Y-DNA match on all surnames for the entire FTDNA
database and see if there are any 37 marker very close matches who have deep
clade tested and this might suggest what your SNP's are. You can do this by
choosing Y-DNA advanced report and click on 12, 25, 37 marker matches.
