Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I am receiving these messages twice every time. Is anyone else having this
problem?

I don't know how the conversion works. Are they able to login to the Family
Tree DNA website to view a matches page (with contact info) the same as
someone who tested with Family Tree DNA? Or can they only see matches on
Ancestry and the public Carter Project chart (no contact info)?

Yes, that is correct. I will have to uncross all my fingers and toes,
sigh. If the current placement that Mike Terry has given the test holds
with
future testing, then we have someone with ancestral roots in New England,
although I think some of the Virginia Carters may still be possible.

Now we know that the Francis Carter married to Margaret Taylor was not a

Having a Y-DNA match with a descendant of someone who lived in New England
does not mean your common ancestor lived in New England. Your common
ancestor could have been back in (old) England.
The match you have with the other members in group R1b - 13 is not a strong
match. (Thus Mike's warning that you may end up in some other group.) Your
most recent common ancestor (MRCA) with the other members of R1b - 13 may
have lived before Christopher Columbus left Europe.
That country of origin of Sweden is a surprise. I never heard of Carter
being a Swedish surname.

Having a Y-DNA match with a descendant of someone who lived in New England
does not mean your common ancestor lived in New England. Your common
ancestor could have been back in (old) England.
The match you have with the other members in group R1b - 13 is not a strong

most recent common ancestor (MRCA) with the other members of R1b - 13 may

That country of origin of Sweden is a surprise. I never heard of Carter
being a Swedish surname.

Having a Y-DNA match with a descendant of someone who lived in New England does not mean your common ancestor lived in New England. Your common ancestor could have been back in (old) England.
The match you have with the other members in group R1b - 13 is not a strong match. (Thus Mike's warning that you may end up in some other group.) Your most recent common ancestor (MRCA) with the other members of R1b - 13 may have lived before Christopher Columbus left Europe.
That country of origin of Sweden is a surprise. I never heard of Carter being a Swedish surname.

Or, could you have a nonpaternity event?

I don't know how the conversion works. Are they able to login to the Family Tree DNA website to view a matches page (with contact info) the same as someone who tested with Family Tree DNA? Or can they only see matches on Ancestry and the public Carter Project chart (no contact info)?

The haplotype will not change; however, the group placement may change when we get the remaining markers. This Kit is 12/12 on the first panel and most of the mismatches most are on the fast mutating DYS markers.... There are others who also have that 12/12 match on the first panel; however, their markers fall off quite a bit after the first 12.

Yes, that is correct. I will have to uncross all my fingers and toes,
sigh. If the current placement that Mike Terry has given the test holds with
future testing, then we have someone with ancestral roots in New England,
although I think some of the Virginia Carters may still be possible.

Now we know that the Francis Carter married to Margaret Taylor was not a
Y-DNA match with John Carter of Watauga who married Elizabeth Taylor. It
looks like it was just a coincidence that two men with the Carter surname
married women from the same Taylor family.

Welcome to new Carter DNA project -- Kit B2449 Francis Carter ~1770 VA m Margaret Taylor
I placed B2449 in Group R1b - 13 with the Rev. Thomas Carter of Woburn MA group. They are haplotype R1b1a2 ...
This is a conversion from Ancestry DNA to FTDNA so only compatible DYS markers with each company are showing for now. The contact for this family may have something to add on the forum.

There are three kinds of DNA tests you can use to establish whether you are genetically related to another person.
Y-DNA - This test traces clearly and exclusively the direct paternal lines. In this case, since you want to test for a certain surname line you would have be a male with that surname or if you are a female you would have to find a male with that surname who you know is related to you to test for you. This is sometimes referred to as a "proxy". The Y-DNA is passed from father to son, father to son, father to son and so forth back in time. For males, most of the time the surname does not change.
MtDNA - This test traces clearly and exclusively the direct maternal lines. This could be you, your mother or grandmother. Personally, I do not think this is as useful for genealogical research as the Y-DNA test for males. Males or Females can take this test. This test might be useful for example to find or half/siblings or adoptive parents.
atDNA - This is known as the Family Finder or Relative Finder test and traces ALL of your ancestral lines for 5 generations. It uses your autosomal DNA to identify confidently relationships for five generations. This is different from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y-chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) tests. They trace clearly and exclusively the direct maternal or paternal lines. This test can be taken by both males and females.
I have had every version up thru FTM 11, and did not know about the sync feature... I have my Ancestry.com much more updated that my Famly Tree Maker, does it also work to go back to my FTM software to sync with what is in my Ancestry.com????
{The Family Tree Maker 2012 has a "sync" program in it. When you enter in your Family Tree on your computer it will Sync with your family tree on Ancestry IF you have In-sync turned on. After thaat your trees will be in sync with each other. Easy instructions in your FTM 2012. Larry F. Carter}
Helen Nichols Murphy (Battleson), Coronado, CA - hewick1(a)yahoo.com
Well, looks like I have to upgrade. It's been too confusing not to have it
sync'd.
It's probably one of the best features they've come along with.
Thanks for the encouragement. I've been busy doing Colonial Dames Work and
haven't been able to devote a lot of time to learning about it.

I had the 2011 version. The 2011 and the 2012 are basically the same. The
only reason I updated was for the sync feature. I had read about it and
that was a feature I had wanted for a long time. The more I learn about this
version the more I like it. It is very easy to move around in.

The Family Tree Maker 2012 has a "sync" program in it. When you enter in
your Family Tree on your computer it will Sync with your family tree on
Ancestry IF you have In-sync turned on. After thaat your trees will be in
sync with each other. Easy instructions in your FTM 2012.

*****************************************
I had the 2011 version. The 2011 and the 2012 are basically the same. The
only reason I updated was for the sync feature. I had read about it and
that was a feature I had wanted for a long time. The more I learn about this
version the more I like it. It is very easy to move around in.

This is in response to the following:
" I have updated to the latest version in the last month because when I do
research, any
changes I make on my computer file is made on my Ancestry file and vice
versa. I was always getting behind updating Ancestry.
Patsy"
What version does this? That's always been my problem. When I updated on
my FTM I'd forget to do it on ancestry and it becomes a big fat mess.

In the 1980's I used Rootsweb II on a CPM computer. I am currently using
Family Tree Maker 16 Version 16.0.350. I am happy with it. There are
others programs that are just as good or maybe better. I also have the free
genealogy program from Familysearch.org called PAF 5 (Personal Ancestral
File version 5) as I have some cousins who are LDS and they sent me their
native file which was not a GEDCOM exchange type file. PAF 5 will export
GEDCOM files though. It was easier than trying to explain the process.
I generally use FTM to help me find census records and other data in the
Ancestry.com database as it interfaces with Ancestry.com as a part of the
program. The other genealogy programs I use are Gensmarts and Charting
Companion which also interfaces with my FTM 16 file. To create htm/html
files I use MS Word and Frontpage.... To create Y-DNA results tables I use
MS Excel spreadsheets and save them as Htm/Html files for uploading to the
Y-DNA surname projects.
When I exchange data I usually send it as as an Adobe Acrobat file (PDF) as
it can be displayed and and printed on anyone's computer or printer and is
not dependent on what size screen you might have or what brand of computer
or operating system. Most programs will generate PDF files... and the
program Adobe Acrobat reader is free.

I have been upgrading my FTM programs for a number of years with no
problems. I have a cousin who thinks the newer versions are too hard but
once you get used to them, I think they are very easy. I have updated to
the latest version in the last month because when I do research, any
changes I make on my computer file is made on my Ancestry file and vice
versa. I was always getting behind updating Ancestry.

PDF is the only way to go, I HATE .doc files and end up having to
translate them on my Mac.
All I have to do now, is learn this genealogy stuff, and its not easy,
but you are doing a WONDERFUL job of teaching!

Hi Kathy,
Larry Carter here. I have been using FTM 16 for years and have just switched
to FTM 2012. I like the new program, however, it is taking some getting used
to as I've had it for about ten days.
I have kept my FTM 16 as well. I have had issues transfering my pictures
from it to FTM 2012 as the older version was before Ancestry became too
involved with the Family Tree Maker program. Also there is a 325 page book
called "Beyond the Basics" by Tana L. Pedersen and published by Ancestry
Publishing that is a good source for learning the new version.
And as Patsy has said, any changes on your Ancestry Tree is made on your
home tree. Your tree can be set up as 'public' or you can keep it private
and only invite whom you want. I think you would enjoy it once you have
tried it. But I'd still keep my version 16 for now. Set yourself up as
"Editor" and everyone else as 'Guest" so they can't change your tree.
Still searching for my connection between New Jersey to Virginia.

Subject: [CARTER-DNA] Genealogy Software Programs
