Hi Nancy,
Looks like we have a fairly close connection, and I think I saw somewhere that you also descend from the Carter's of Isle of Wight Co., VA? I am wondering where Thomas Marshall Carter, Jr. was born??

I probably told you that Herring Carter (1800-1881)… [son of Alexander
Carter (1774-1852), son of Solomon (1725-1809) Carter]… moved his family
from Albertson, Duplin Co, NC to Thomas County, GA and Leon County, FL. Herring’s
sons were: James M. Carter, Morris Carter, William P. Carter, Henry Clay Carter
(my great-great-grandfather) and, also (I believe) one of his sons was Alexander
Carter (1826-1881) who was born at Cool Water and died in Decatur, GA. His
wife was Dinah or Diana (b. 1840- d. --) and they had a daughter Susan Frances Barriett
(1862-1885). I am still trying to confirm information about this son, Alexander,
who would have been a brother of my Confederate 2nd great-grandfather
Henry Clay Carter. If he indeed was Henry’s brother, then Henry would not
have been the only one to survive the War Between the States. I always wondered
if this son of Hering’s maybe went to TN after they all moved from Cool
Water and Point of View Plantations, which were right next to one-another, in Albertson,
Duplin, NC.

Hi Holly,
I am a huge supporter of DNA for genealogy, as I have worked hard on my Mom's Carter line since 1967, so have tons of paper trails,
and I can now see it all coming together in this and other lineages. I just wish I understood the markers better and what it means if it is off by one marker..such as the one below compared to my Carter line #134472:
Compared kit #134472 to kit #189663 - it is off from mine by 1 marker in value 391 - Gayland Carter's kit has 10 and #189663 is 11
Does that meant we in no way connect??? Help me understand, Please. The excellent genealogy done by Bill Murphy of North Carolina done in the 80's & 90's, took my Duplin Co., NC line to New Bern Co., NC, back to Isle of Wight Co., VA and then back to London, England.

Helen:
I am from Jacob Carter/ Rockingham/Colleton through both paper trail and
DNA (I1a). We trace back from there to Thomas Carter of Isle of Wight
and beyond using Rootsweb. I have no evidence of the validity of the
Rootsweb trail.
I also have no info on Thomas's DNA.
The following info pertains to my direct line. I am Kit # 205340 and
currently shown in the "ungrouped" section.
Good luck !

If you are talking about Haplogroup R1b, Group 4 at carter-cousins.org, my
late husband's ggg-grandfather Solomon (b. 1813 in Wilson Co. TN) was in
some way related.
My husband's test kit was 89246.
I do not have proof at this point of who Solomon's parents were.

Your Solomon born 1822 is definitely a relation of some sort per DNA
evidence, the way I see it, but I don't know the exact connection.
An Alexander Carter married to Rhoda Benthall was living near Solomon
(born 1813) in Rutherford Co. at one point. I think it was for the
1840 census. I have been in touch with a woman researching Alexander,
who feels he came from the area of NC you reference, but she does not
know of any male relatives who can provide DNA samples.
Have wondered if Solomon born 1813's parents may have been a Thomas
(supposed to have been born about 1782 in VA) and Celia Brewer Carter,
living in Rutherford County for the 1820-1850 censuses, but I have no
proof of that.

I have been stuck for a long time here. Any clues where to go? I have only
the 37 marker test, is it worth it to go to 67 markers since I have had no
other clues past my great grandfather James L Carter b.1831 d 1898 in Clarke
County VA.
John Carter
Hi Holly,
I'm saying that I match Haplogroup R1b , Group 1 test results to kits #15223
and # 30226 as well as other kits in Group l test, 15 in all. Those first
two kits go to William Carter (1660).
Kit # 39347 is in Haplogroup 15, R1b1c
Kit # 110505 is in Rb1-99, R1b1a2
I see kit #39347 has William Carter (1641). He is the father of William
Carter (1660).
I have not seen a tree for #110505.
Are kits 15223 and 30226 Correct? I don't know. Are kits 39347 and 110505
incorrect? I don't know.
Why they are in different Groups?
A paper trail is only so good. At times, the paper trail just runs out. Then
there are times it pops up when least expected. I have been having trouble
finding William Carter (1796) in the death records of Ohio. Last entry for
him was in the 1880 US Census in Ohio at the age of 84. Darke County and
Logan County Genealogical Societies have both exhausted their resources for
him as well as his wife. Both societies have said there is a possibility
their deaths were never recorded as this happens quite a bit in various
areas. My paper trail ends there in 1880, so now I am working on his
children to see if I can find any way around this problem and that of
finding the tie-in from New Jersey to Virginia.

As a side note, my Dad's Carters are R1b, Group 20 (test kit 78113).

Gayland Carter of TX is haplogroup R1b1b2 - (shorthand: R-M269)
I have had 67 markers tested for him to date, however the first 12:
13 - 24 - 14 - 10 - 11 - 14 -12 - 12 - 10 - 13 - 13 - 29
While I lived in Middlesex County, VA for a number of years... Our Carter's came from the Carter's of Virginia .. Isle of Wight Co., VA, to Duplin Co., NC, thru GA, to TN (west TN) McNairy Co., and to MS (Tishomingo & Tippah Cos.), and in 1905 my Grandpa Carter left TN for Texas, where my mother was born in 1916.

Hello Holly,
First let me apologize. I have not confirmed the Carter Middlesex County,
Virginia DNA. An uncle of mine had our family tied into Robert "King"
Carter of Lancaster County, Virginia. I spent a good number of years trying
to 'prove' this line. Each time I would find an individual that he had in
the tree that he had constructed, I could not bring that person down to our
present Carter line.
When the DNA testing first became popular, my brother and I did the DNA
test. Based on other persons in the Carter-Cousins. Org web site, we were
related to the Carter line of Middlesex County Virginia and not Robert
"King" Carter. My first contact with the group was with Kathy Wells. She was
surprised that our Carter line from New Jersey was related to her Carter
line from Virginia. I have been trying to bring these two lines together.
The connection to William Carter (1796) New Jersey has to be from a sibling
of William Carter (1660) or thru an uncle or possibly even William Carter's
father of 1641, Virginia. I say this because William Carter (1660) and his
two families, one with Penelope Pew and the other with Mary Goodloe have
been/are being researched by descendants of these two families and have not
tied the two Carter lines to New Jersey. Since my line is in New Jersey to
Southwestern Ohio, I have not pursed any of these families from Virginia
except for two years ago, my brother and I visited the two Christ Parish
Churches. The one in Lancaster County, Virginia is where Robert "King"
Carter is buried. It's interesting that Robert and his family are buried
behind the church and his father John Carter is buried inside the church,
just to the right of the pulpit.
At Christ Parish Church in Middlesex County, Virginia, we talked to a group
of men and they said we needed the Christ Parish Church in Lancaster County.
I mentioned that we were related to William Carter (1660) that married
Penelope Pew and Mary Goodloe. One of the men said that he was a Goodloe.
This was John Goodloe a relative of Mary Goodloe. The records were
unavailable at the time as the secretary that had the keys and access to the
records was in Richmond, Virginia recovering from an operation. So we were
unable to check records at that time.
DNA paper trail based on kit numbers 15223 and 30226 that lead to William
Carter (1660) Middlesex County Virginia and my DNA matching their DNA, that
puts me in relation with William Carter (1660) even tho my paper trail has
taken me to William Carter (1796) of New Jersey.

I looked at the kit # 134472: of my Carter cousin in Texas, descent from the Carter's of Isle of Wight Co., VA;Matches In The Carter-Society Project
If you see an additional level of testing or another test type listed in
parentheses next to a match's name, this indicates the highest level of testing
your match has taken. We can only compare your results up to the highest level
of testing you both have taken.

A resent posting mentioned not being able to afford DNA testing. Some DNA
projects establish a fund that receives contributions that can be used to
provided help when needed. Is there any interest in having such a fund? It
would be an added task for our Administrator.
I read some of the FamilyTreeDNA FAQs, and It appears that they supply tools
to help the Administrator maintain a fund.
I can talk from personel experience. I had an uncle that researched the
Carter family for better than 30 years. I became interested in the family in
the early 1990's. I started looking for more information on the Carter line
that he had going back to the1450's. A great tree! But... and there is
always a 'but'...when I started digging into the line of Robert "King"
Carter, I could find the people he had us tied into, however, I could not
tie them into our family. Along came DNA testing and low-and-behold!!, our
Carter line was tied into the Carter line from Christ Parish, Middlesex
County, Virginia and not to the Robert "King" Carter of Christ Parish,
Lancaster County, Virginia even tho they are just a few mile a part
seperated by the Rappahannock River. Made a few of my Carter relatives upset
with me. At least they are talking to me now and we are on the right track.
DNA works. It may not bring down all the brick walls, but it will help you
to eliminate the Carter's that are not in your line and keep you on the
right track and save time for the right family. My paper trail takes me to
William Carter (1796) in New Jersey even tho my DNA testing goes to William
Carter of 1660 in Virginia. I am in the process of trying to bring the brick
wall down and tieing my New Jersey line to the Virginia line.
The discussions here are good. They help all to see that we are not alone
in our problems and frustrations in our research. I for one thank those that
have contributed to these writings.

While I don't know, consider this: a group has built up a membership based
on paper documentation, and some people may have told their family for years
that they were descended from the King. Then along comes DNA, which will
probably disprove some of those carefully built up paper trails among those
who have a Carter surname, but won't affect any of the members whose Carters
are in the dim past rather than the here and now. While I disagree, I can
see why they might not want to have much to do with DNA. To me, I'd much
rather know, even if it completely uproots my tree, but I know that there
are some in the family history community that think otherwise, whether or
not they will admit it.

So far there has been no response. I think Kathleen Levens is the
administrator for the Robert "King" Carter website.
I expect they are similar to The Carter Society where they accept *any*
documented descendent, not just direct paternal line descendants, if that is
the case, I expect many, possibly even most (or even all), of their members
have a surname other than Carter. It's possible they don't know the correct
Y-DNA and are too embarrassed to admit their lack of knowledge. I don't
know what their story is but their silence makes me wonder if they are
trying to keep a secret.
Or maybe they are committed to 100% paper-trail documentation only because
they don't want to differentiate between their Carter surname members and
non-Carter surname members.

Carolyn,
Is this the Mayflower Stephen Hopkins?? If so we are cousins again!! And
if so, just wanted to be sure you knew he is a 'two-for'! Meaning you get
Mayflower Society and Jamestown both with him.
Also, I agree 100% with what you said. Each individual is as important as
the next, and those horse-thives are many times the more interesting. You
have to keep digging, and don't give up. I usually read everything that is
posted even if it doesn't pertain to my line. AND, I have found this all
extremely interesting!!! And (again), you never know when a clue might be
accidentally dropped which you can benefit from. I hope Ann does not give
up!

Ann, I think that, for me, part of the fascination with doing family
research is finding out some of those things that our families never knew or
never believed was important enough to tell us. When we identify the line
we
belong to, we can then begin to fill in those blank spots when we connect
with other people from the same line (who have stories), and from reading
histories of the area and the times our ancestors lived in. Like you, I'm
not interested in finding anyone "important" -- they're all important as
part
of the American journey, no matter when or how our ancestors got here --
so, as far as I'm concerned, a horse thief is as interesting as a wealthy
planter. And some of those notables had some colorful backgrounds! One of
my husband's ancestors, a man named Stephen Hopkins (who has books written
about him), was very nearly hanged for mutiny, but talked his way out of
it!
HA... (I like to remind my husband about this, from time to time,
whenever he's in the position of talking his own way out of some small
domestic
hanging! Those were some mighty powerful "smooth-talking" genes that were
clearly passed down from old Stephen Hopkins!)
It was quite a challenge to find a male Carter cousin to participate in
the DNA testing, because I had been under the impression that no direct male
Carter descendants existed in my line. Fortunately, digging deeper, but
forward rather than in the past, turned up a whole bunch of surviving sons;
they'd all moved from Tennessee to Arkansas and Missouri.
It was this search forward, with the mission of finding a DNA donor, that
helped me fill in some of those family stories I was talking about earlier.
The donor's wife had a written history of why that branch of the family
had moved in the first place, and some stories about what happened to some
of them during the Civil War. This, then, gave me a new perspective on my
own family. The beauty of this is that the donor and his family were total
strangers to me when they agreed to participate, and yet we've since shared
pictures, phone calls, and emails. Aside from the crucial information of
identifying our Carter line, their family history explained why a whole
batch of Carter sons left Tennessee in the first place: they were headed to
Seattle, to participate in the Gold Rush! They never made it that far,
though, due to dystentery and several deaths along the way. I never would
have
known any of this if I hadn't been searching for DNA. To me, this piece of
family history is far more interesting than being aligned with a notable
name.
The other benefit to the DNA study was that it helped me save some time!
I was especially interested in (and focusing on) three Carter lines, going
back and forth among which one might be mine. Only so I would know, not
having any preference of one over the other. The DNA results identified
which line I should research, and it was the one I'd originally thought was
the
most likely.
I'm sorry you think of us as being unfriendly. It's probably more like
being that proverbial dog with a bone; we dig in when we're on the trail of
something we think might be important, and chew on the few clues we have
until we get answers. By doing that, we sometimes set other conversations
aside as being unrelated to what we're looking for, but please don't let
that
stop you from sharing your own information or stories. I think we've all
learned that valuable clues to research can sometimes be found in the
smallest details: an unusual name, a visit to a particular location
(why???),
family folklore, etc. It's all important!
The DNA test wasn't a magic bullet; I still don't know who my earliest
ancestor's parents were, or where he fits into the now-identified line, but
I'm
determined to find out! I'm sure that tests will become more affordable,
over time, and there are sometimes "sales". For me, it was worth the cost,
but I certainly thought about it a few times before going forward. That's
a decision that each of us has to make, and if it isn't something that you
feel is currently important enough for you to participate in, then no one
is going to fault you for it!
I hope you'll continue to read our conversations -- there might be a hidden
clue for you somewhere, buried in the discussions -- and that you'll join
the other Carter lists too. You never know when or where you'll find an
important piece of information!
Best wishes and good luck.

I would like to add my congratulations and gratitude to Keith for taking on
this huge task and responsibility. I would be more than happy to help
with "housekeeping" tasks on the site, if you need it. My ability to answer
DNA questions is somewhat pitiful, but if there's something else I can
contribute, I'd be happy to do so.

Keith, once again, THANK YOU for accepting the task of resurrecting the
Family Tree DNA Carter Surname Y-DNA Project.
Just for the record, it is my understanding that it was Family Tree DNA
who removed Vickie, Dick, and Judy. I don't think Keith removed them and
this wasn't something that I was expecting.

Ann, I think that, for me, part of the fascination with doing family
research is finding out some of those things that our families never knew or
never believed was important enough to tell us. When we identify the line we
belong to, we can then begin to fill in those blank spots when we connect
with other people from the same line (who have stories), and from reading
histories of the area and the times our ancestors lived in. Like you, I'm
not interested in finding anyone "important" -- they're all important as part
of the American journey, no matter when or how our ancestors got here --
so, as far as I'm concerned, a horse thief is as interesting as a wealthy
planter. And some of those notables had some colorful backgrounds! One of
my husband's ancestors, a man named Stephen Hopkins (who has books written
about him), was very nearly hanged for mutiny, but talked his way out of it!

I've been doing more reading about John Carter of Watauga and I don't think he was the illegitimate son of John "Secretary" Carter as some researchers have suggested. That is, I don't think Kit # 19789 is the correct Y-DNA for Robert "King" Carter.
I found this bit of information from 2009:
http://www.enotes.com/topic/Haplogroup_E1b1b1a_(Y-DNA)
"However, More recently, Tillmar et al. (2009) typed 147 males from Somalia for 12 Y-STR loci, and observed that 77% (113/147) had typical E1b1b1a1b haplotypes. This is the highest frequency of E1b1b1a1b found in any single sample population."
My current hypothesis is that John Carter of Watauga was the son of a *daughter* of Robert "King" Carter and a slave of African descent. That could be part of the explanation for why Rear Admiral/Brevet Major General Samuel P. Carter, a great-grandson of John Carter of Watauga, fought for the Union against his cousin Robert E. Lee.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_P._Carter
In other words, John Carter of Watauga was the illegitimate *nephew* (not son) of John "Secretary" Carter. So, for now, the correct Y-DNA for Robert "King" Carter remains a mystery.

Some say John Carter of Watauga was a grandson of Robert "King" Carter but Kit # 19789 has not made that claim. Kit # 19789 is Y-DNA Haplogroup "E1b1b1a1b" which is Jewish. According to Dick Zieman, "This may - or may not - be the correct DNA for King Carter"
