Hi Nancy;
Thank you so very much Nancy for responding to my email about the Carter's.
I don't have any further information on them except what I had written to
Kelly about.
Gosh, it would be great if our lineage did connect as I am at a loss on how
to find this part of my ancestry. I was so excited to have found the 1850
Census in Weakley County, Tennessee with William D. Carter (married to Mary Ann
Lawler). I don't know either of his parents names, where in N. Carolina,
etc. According to the census he was a saddler. I also know that on Ancestry.com
they listed him in the 1850 Census as William D. CASTER and not CARTER.
I have not been able to convince any of my brother's, cousins, Uncles to do
the DNA even though they have interest in the lineage. From what I understand,
the DNA needs to come from the male in the family to be accurate?
Please keep my email address in case you should happen to run across
something. I guess I just need to keep begging one of them to do the DNA. (I offered
to pay for it to be done and that didn't work)
Thanks again,
Linda Overby-Hedge

Hi Linda -
It's no intrusion at all - that's what listservs are for :-) Anyway,
your Carters don't seem to match with mine. The only place in Tennessee
where my Caleb (born in Virginia around 1796) is known to have lived was
Monroe County, which is located in the mountains of East Tennessee. From
there he and his family migrated in the mid to late 1830s to Greene
County, MO, and I know of no Carters in our line who were in Weakley
County or anywhere else in West Tennessee for that matter.
Sorry I can't be of any help, but maybe someone else on the list might
recognize your Carters. Good luck!
Kelly

Hi Kelly;
I apologize for intruding on your and Layne's conversation about the
Caleb
Carter Lineage but I have been at a brick wall for some years now and
don't
know where else to turn to get information about my CARTER Lineage.
I was wondering if Caleb Carter lineage would include William D. Carter
who
according to the 1850 census Weakley County, Tennessee, was born in N.
Carolina? William D. Carter was married to Mary Ann Lawler. They had
three sons
together- James Martin Carter, William P. Carter and Joseph S. Carter
all born
in Weakley County, Tennessee. Mary Ann Lawler/Carter died not long after
she
gave birth to Joseph S. Carter from what I can gather. Her mother Nancy
Ann
Davis/Lawler and her sister's took the boys in and raised them. I
believe that
William D. Carter may have died not long after Mary Ann did. I have
found that
they are buried at Mt. Pelia Cemetery, Weakley County, Tennessee.
That is about all that I have dating my CARTER lineage back. I have been
able to get information from then on, finding out that Mack Carter who
was
editor of the Lady's Home Journal, Women's Day, etc. magazines.
Unfortunately, by
the time I was able to find out about being related to him, he had
passed
away.
Any help that you or anyone on the list, might be able to provide would
more
then be appreciated.

Hi Nancy -
It's good to hear from you too! I'm not surprised Gary didn't reply - I
don't think he is at all interested in genealogy and it was like pulling
teeth just to get that DNA sample out of him :-)
Have you seen that some trees on the Internet (including that of Craig
Snyder on Rootsweb) list the following as our Caleb's parents?
"Thomas Carter was born 1763 in King William Co., Virginia, and died 25
JUL 1822 in Roane Co., Tennessee.
Elizabeth (Carter) was born 4 AUG 1762 in Virginia, and died 1847 in
Roane Co., Tennessee.
Children of Elizabeth (Carter) and Thomas Carter are:
i. Polly Carter was born ABT 1787. She married John Bower 31 MAR 1829 in
Knoxville, Tennessee. He was born 1787.
ii. Leroy Carter was born 1790 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and died
4 SEP 1837 in McMinn Co., Tennessee.
iii. Robert Carter was born 1795 in Wythe Co., Virginia, and died
1849 in Roane Co., Tennessee. He married Charlotte Walker.
iv. Caleb Carter was born ABT 1796 in Montgomery Co., Virginia, and
died 22 NOV 1861 in Bois d'Arc, Greene Co, Missouri. He married Nancy
Ferguson 15 MAR 1826 in Surety, Roane Co., Tennessee, daughter of
Unknown Ferguson. She was born ABT 1797 in Monroe Co., Tennessee, and
died 30 JUN 1875 in Bois d'Arc, Greene Co., Missouri. He married Unknown
(Carter).
v. William Carter was born 1797 in Wythe Co., Virginia, and died 16
MAR 1867 in Roane Co., Tennessee. He married Susan Ferguson 27 MAY 1817
in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was born 1794 in Virginia.
vi. Thomas F. Carter was born 1805 in Virginia. He married Elenor
Walker 16 JAN 1827 in Roane Co., Tennessee. She was born 1810 in
Tennessee.
vii. Elizabeth Carter was born 1807. She married Randolph Carter 14
JAN 1845."
I don't know if you accept this version or not - I personally don't feel
that the age of the Caleb/Calip mentioned in this Thomas Carter's will
matches the dates of our Caleb.
I think one key to solving the mystery could be to find the War of 1812
records for Caleb's father, who, according to the bio of Caleb's son
Rolla published in Greene County, MO, fought in that war. There are
just so many Carters from VA who fought in that war that I have not yet
taken on the task of going through all of them in the National Archives.
Fortunately, however, the Archives is only about a 10-minute walk from
where I work, so if you or others from the Caleb group have any
particular leads to focus on, I would be glad to research the documents
at the Archives.

Hi Layne -
Have you seen Vinita Miller's book on the Caleb Carter Family (published
in about 1983)? Near the end of that book she has one page on a James
Carter who was supposed to have been Caleb's brother. This James and his
family supposedly migrated with Caleb's family from Tennessee to the
Springfield, MO, area, but James passed away soon after. There is no
confirmation that James and Caleb were actually brothers, just
apparently family tradition that Mrs. Miller had collected. If you
don't have the book, let me know and I will forward to the list a
transcript of that page listing James and his family. I have the book
at home and could e-mail it this evening (provided of course we don't
have more storms and I lose power again like last night!)

Dear Corinna -
I could probably be of more help to you than Gary Carter, unless you are
looking for specific information about him personally or his kids. I am
the one who got him to provide the DNA sample for the test (he is my
mom's first cousin and not involved in genealogy except as a DNA
source). My line from Caleb (my great-great-great-great grandfather) is
as follows:
Caleb Carter (m. Nancy Ferguson)
Rolla Carter (m. Elizabeth Dorrell)
Stephen Carter (m. Sarah Richard)
Frank Carter (m. Gertrude Winter)
Gordon Carter (m. Phyllis O'Kelley)
Linda Kaye Carter (m. James Robbins)
Me
Gary Carter is the son of my grandpa Gordon Carter's younger brother
Dwight.
I would be glad to exchange information with you or others interested in
Caleb. I have to say though that he is probably the longest-standing
brick wall in my family tree. When I started with genealogy 31 years ago
(age 12), the Carters were the first family I tried to document, and all
these years later I am no further back than Caleb, the furthest-back
Carter whom my grandpa told me about.
You're welcome to contact me directly at krobbins(a)nas.edu or reply

are interested in.
