Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thank you very much! Yes, that is the Robert Carter. My family is from
Wilson and Sumner Counties, TN, and also Allen County, KY. I will certainly
look at your DNA #! I've done a little research on who Charles Carter's
father might be but nothing concrete yet. Since I'm also looking at the
Braswells in NC, I'm learning more every day about Halifax County and the
surrounding area. I'm thinking Charles has to be from the VA Carters;
however, I could be wrong. People were coming in from the north all during
that period. I just need to do more research right there in Halifax to get
the deeds of Charles Carter and see where his property was located. Halifax
was made from Edgecombe in 1758 and Edgecombe was made from Bertie in 1741
and Bertie was made from Chowan in 1722 and Chowan was made from Albermarle
in 1670. So, Charles's father could be any of the Carters from those
counties. I would very much like to exchange information with you.

I'm becoming concerned about Vickie with so many people not knowing where
she is, and with her many emails going unanswered.
Does anyone remember where she lives? Maybe someone needs to telephone her
to be certain that she's okay!

I'm at work and don't have time right now, but if someone could go back into the archives when this first started, I think she gave us her family tree history and may have given some information about herself. I believe she lives in TN .
At the main page, www.carter-cousins.org, on the left is Browse the Archives of the Carter DNA list. I will also look tonight to see if I can find anything.

I agree, Vickie has done a great job. By the way, was she paying for the website out of her own pocket. I looked thru other sites to see if she had posted any queries and don't find any. Can someone contact Family Tree DNA to see if they have heard from her.

Leland... try going to the Family tree dna site
http://www.familytreedna.com
if this is where you obtained you test, log on, check ydna matches... Your
DNA will be shown with exact and close matches..
I am sure Vickie will catch up, if not we will carry on. it's not like

Folks,
Please don't get discouraged. None of us know what has happened to Vickie. I
am the person that originally got this DNA project going for our Carter
families, but because I am not good with the computer or really understand
DNA workings, I asked if anyone would take over running this. Vickie, and,
if I remember correctly, a couple of others offered. I don't know if those
others are still on this email group, but if you are, is there any way that
you can help? Also, did Vickie have a backup person that helped her out?
Once she took over and I stepped out of everything, I did not pay any
attention to the runnings of all of this.
If Vickie is on vacation, I hope we will hear from her soon. But if
something has happened to her, is there anyone on the list who understands
all she has done and could take over? Is there someone who could become her
backup when we hear from her again?
Please don't let all this hard work fall apart. Vickie has done a wonderful
job, but I think it is time she has a backup and that we get the issues
fixed.

It happens. I'm sure it makes an interesting story as to how you ended up
with African Y-DNA. You might want to check-out some of these websites.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_E3a_(Y-DNA)
"In human genetics, Haplogroup E3a (M2) is a Y-chromosome haplogroup. This
haplogroup is a branch of Haplogroup E. Haplogroup E3a is restricted to
sub-Saharan Africa outside of the Horn of Africa (where E3b dominates) and descendant
populations. It is the single largest Y-chromosome haplogroup in this area."
http://afrigeneas.com/forum-dna/index.cgi?noframes;read=3360
"My dad recently sent his dna to the national geographic genealogy project
and discovered that his Y chromosome is also in haplogroup E3a. He was adopted
in California and does not know his biological father or mother. The really
interesting complication is that he appears 100% ethnically European. There is
the possibility that his male ancestors were North African, but there were very
few people of those ethnic groups in California at the time."
http://afrigeneas.com/forum-dna/index.cgi?noframes;read=3365
"You just cannot predict the result from what the person looks like. He could
have 999 of 1,000 ancestors who were European and the 1,000th one is the
Y-chromosome line."
http://afrigeneas.com/forum-dna/index.cgi?noframes;read=3367
"You can find those that appear different from their DNA in even within
recent generations. There are many in the late 1800s in the US that 'crossed-over'
even though they were 2 generations away from a different ancestry."
http://afrigeneas.com/forum-dna/index.cgi?noframes;read=3370
"This represents an entire unwritten chapter of American history. In his
essay "The Invention of the Color Line: 1691" Frank Sweet writes about early
Virginia:
"Intermarriage was common. Visitors reported that the colony “swarms with
mulatto children, and these mulattoes, if but three generations removed from the
black father or mother [are accepted as White].”8 Among prominent interracial
marriages were those of European attorney William Greensted and his biracial
wife Elizabeth Kay, African slaveowner Francis Payne and his European wife Amy,
European Francis Skipper and his African wife Ann Cocore, African James Tate
and his European wife Hester, and African Phillip Mognum and his European wife
Mary Morris.9 Then attitudes began to change." "

My grandfather's parents on my maternal side were Elijah E. Carter married
to Euphemia (a/k/a Uphemia) McClelland Carroll. Euphemia's first marriage
was to Webster McClelland (I have been told -- no proof yet). Mr.
McClelland died and Euphemia married my great-grandfather Elijah E. Carter.
Elijah's father was Samuel Carter who married a Mary Lee. According to that
family tree (on Ancestry World Tree) there does not seem to be a connection
to Robert E. Lee but I'm not sure the timing for the Lee's goes that far
back. Mary Lee's father was Moses (married to Sarah Electa Guilford. They
were from North and South Carolina and then migrated to Georgia where Elijah
E. Carter was born. Moses Lee was born in Virginia in 1726 and died in
South Carolina in 1804. Could Moses possibly be a relative of Robert E.
Lee? This is just a guess. I would need to research Robert E. Lee's family
tree if one has been done by a professional genealogist.
None of the names you mentioned have a connection to the above Lee family or
my Carter family.

I don't know how this may relate to your family, but Robert E. Lee's parents
were "Lighthorse Harry" Lee and Annie Hill Carter. Annie Hill Carter was the
daughter of Charles Hill Carter I and Anne Butler Moore. Charles Hill Carter
was the son of John Carter of Shirley and Elizabeth Hill, and John Carter of
Shirley was the son of Robert "King" Carter. Thus, both of Robert E. Lee's
parents were from notable and well respected families. His father was a
noted military figure and Revolutionary War hero, and his mother was a
descendant of probably the most prominent family in early Virginia history,
a great granddaughter of Robert "King" Carter. Note that Robert E. Lee,
therefore, was a 2nd great grandson of Robert "King" Carter on the maternal
side. The Lee family is considered to be one of the First Families of
Virginia, and not surprisingly, because of the connection of the Lee and
Carter families, "Lee" became a very popular first name or middle name among
the Carter family. You will also find the name "Carter" appearing in the
families of the descendants of Robert E. Lee.
Also of note, Robert E. Lee married Mary Anne Randolph Custis, whose father
was George Washington Parke Custis, related to George Washington (I don't
remember the exact lineage without going back and checking). And Charles
Hill Carter's nephew, Charles Carter of Deerwood (son of Edward Carter of
Blenheim), married Elizabeth (Betty) Lewis, the daughter of Fielding Lewis
and Elizabeth (Betty) Washington, the only sister of George Washington. The
name "George" or "George Washington" also appears often in the Carter family
in the 1800's. In fact, Charles Carter of Deerwood and Betty Lewis Carter
named one of their sons George Washington Carter. I have several George
Washington Carters in my family.

I hate to sound stupid, but what is the significance of the name "Lee"? My
husband's uncle was Walter Lee Carter Jr, obviously, there was a Walter Lee
Sr. Sr's father's middle name was Lee as well. This line can be traced
from Baltimore back to Virginia, but no further. Can I assume that the
"Lee" bit is an homage to Robert E. Lee?
thanks.

Kit # 88894 is now showing on the Test Results webpage (the numbers version)
in the "All Other" group at the very bottom. It has Haplogroup E3a which is
