I have been doing genealogy for about 35 years now. So because of
that, I called some of my favorite societies to see if they could accept
(as of now) about 350, 3-ring white binders; 3, 5-drawer legal size file
cabinets full of documentation; and 14 bookcases of genealogy books. I
told them I was planning to put the names of the societies in my Will,
that would be willing to accept all this. Even though I hope to live
another 30 years, I wanted to have some sort of comfort level. The DAR
Library in Washington DC will take everyone's research no matter what.
As for the books, they will take what they don't have, and let other
libraries know of the availability of the rest of the books. I also
found several genealogy societies that said they will take it all,
because my families are so concentrated in those areas. They will do
the same as the DAR with my books, however, because my major focus is
Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, those locations would end up
keeping most of my books except for any duplicates.
I would not leave this up to my family, but do the research myself and
make a codicil to your Will about your genealogy.
Just my thoughts
Margaret

To my spouse, children, or guardian,
Upon my demise it is requested that you DO NOT dispose of any of my
genealogical records, books, files, notebooks, or computer programs for
a period of two years. During this time, please attempt to find one or
more persons willing to take custody of the said materials, and the
responsibility of maintaining and continuing the family histories. In
the event you do not find anyone to accept these materials, please
contact the genealogical organizations of which I have been a member to
determine if they will accept some parts, or all of, my genealogical
materials. Please remember that my genealogical endeavors have consumed
a great deal of time, travel, and money. Therefore, please do not
ignore my request.
