Good Day Jim,
I saw you Carswell posting. To my knowledge
Carswells have come from either Scotland or England . My family were tenant
farmers from Neilston Parish Renfrewshire Scotland & have been there for
many centuries. Ponts map of the Barronee of Renfrew hand drawn in 1590
shows the farms/hamlets of Carswell, Nether Carswell. Poll tax records of
1695 show 3 families of Carswell farming near Neilston .
There is another family of Carswell from Argyllshire
Scotland, the more famous/ infamous being John Carswell who was Bishop of
Argyll & the Isles in 1560. His father was Archibald Carswell, Constable of
Carnassarie Castle in 1495.
Other Scotland Carswells are the farmers from Shotts (a
little East of Glascow) , the Fife Carswells & the millers ,traders & ship
owners from Kirkcudbright. There are no doubt more Carswell pockets in
Scotland.
I do not know much of the English Carswells but do know
that there was a large branch down in Devon in the 1500 & 1600's. Whether
they came up to Scotland with the Anglo Norman Barons in the 1100's is
conjecture.
Good luck with your search.I am
interested to know more of your Carswell family & how they came to be in
USA.
John Carswell NSW
Australia.Researching Carswells from Renfrewshire.enquires welcome.
