John, the late Ian Douglas Campbell, The Duke of Argyll, and I had a conservation about
Carswell, Bishop of the Isles and Argyll, many years ago. He told me that Carswell was a
part of Clan Campbell, but he did not think any Carswell could prove a link directly to
the Bishop. I have seen several articles in Galic on The Bishop published in a magazine
published in Glasgow in the 1850-1890 period. There were translations in another magazine
of the period in the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Library- Special
Collections. In the Archive at Inverraray Castle, Inverray, Argyllshire, you will find
material relating to John Carswell(Carswald) Bishop of the Isles and Argyll. You must be a
serious historical researcher to gain access to the Archive. I don't know the current
archivist, but you could log on to the castle web site and get more information. John
Carswell was a student studing for the pristhood when John Knox returned to the college.
John became a follower of J!
ohn Knox, but became a priest because Queen Mary paid the priests a stidend to support
their work. The newly formed Presperty has no fund to support their adherdents.
Aye yours, Gael
