Buried at the Hephzibah City Cem. in Richmond Co., GA is a Thomas Janes Carswell b. Apr
6, 1877; d. Feb 10, 1913. He has a rather large Tombstone and these letters are under his
name: L. I. PH. M. D. (dont know what they mean except MD is probably for Doctor.)
Three stones at the foot of this large Tombstone read:
DR. T. Carswell 1877-1913
Rev. J. H. Carswell 1849-1918
Mrs. J. H. Carswell 1848-1921
Other graves which appear to be in same plot are:
Arthur Egene Carswell b. Mar 10, 1879; d. May 30, 1938
Edna Kiser Carswell b. Aug 2, 1909; d. Mar 20, 1990
Edna is next to Arthur Eugene)
Mary Eliza Carwell, wife of Dr. Bryant J. Smith, b. Mar 27, 1874; d. Aug 29, 1962 (saw no
grave for Dr Smith)
William Davis Carswell b. Apr 23, 1880; d. Apr 5, 1930
Linnie Estelle Netherland b. Apr 25, 1876; d. Oct 10, 1924
(William and Linnie on same stone with "His Wife" between their names)
Rosa Carswell Patterson b. Rosier, GA Oct 10, 1914; d. Columbus, Ohio Nov 21, 1961.
Oldest Carswells in this Cemetery appear to be:
Matthew J. b. Jan 18, 1822; d. Apr 12, 1887
Matthew's wife b. Jun 16 1825; d. Apr 12, 1892
(I cant read what I wrote down as her name?? Believe it was Helen??)
Also Have a Mrs Jane Carswell, Consort of Edward Carswell, Died Oct 23, 1834, Aged 74
years (b. abt 1760)
Jane is buried at Charles Clark Family cem. in Burke Co., GA. (not far from Hephzibah).
Have since found that Jane's maiden name was trimble.....Her dau., Eleanor Carswell
(1781-1826), was 1st wife of Charles Clark (1782-1856)..
Have photos of Clark Family Cem and also Clark's Chapel Meth Church Cem (also in Burke
Co). Havent taken any photos of Hephzibah cem. yet.
