Hi, Listers!
With the warm days of summer most of us are looking forward to vacations,
and to trips in search of our ancestors. I thought that it was a good time
to remind everyone of good mailing list subscriber manners when it comes to
vacations and time out of the office.
This is the time of year when mailing list administrators begin receiving
returned mail notices that say the subscriber is "over quota" or "exceeds
quota" or "mail box full." Another problem that I've noticed recently
is
that some subscribers to are subscribed from their office E-mail address.
They schedule notices to be sent automatically from their office computer
saying that they are out of the office and will return on a specific date.
Any time a message like that is generated in response to a mailing list
message the response is automatically sent back to the list. This is
annoying and inconsiderate to fellow list members.
Since there is no way to put your subscription on "vacation hold" or "no
mail hold" you should unsubscribe from any mailing lists that you receive
unless you plan to check your messages daily while you're away from home.
You can then subscribe again when you return home or to the office.
To unsubscribe simply send a message to XXXX-L-request(a)rootsweb.com with the
word UNSUBSCRIBE in the Subject line. If you belong to the digest version
of your lists send the message to XXXX-D-request(a)rootsweb.com Of course you
want to substitute the name of the list for the XXXX. When you arrive back
home repeat the process, but put the word SUBSCRIBE in the Subject line.
Don't remember all the lists to which you subscribe? Simply go to Password
Central at RootsWeb.com--
http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ -- and
request a list of all the mailing lists to which you are subscribed.
Remember, if your mail box exceeds its quota you will be automatically
unsubscribed by the mailing list "robot." Also, if I receive an "out of
office" message I will, as the list administrator, unsubscribe your E-mail
address.
Have a wonderful summer and share your discoveries with the other members of
the mailing list.
