I've been looking into the early Carsons of Pennsylvania
>and thought I'd share information I have on William Carson
>Adams COunty PA.
>
>William died according to a will signed Sept 20, l749 (20
>7th mo 1749) and probated June 11, l750 in Menallan Twp,
>Adams County (then York) PA. There is land warranted by
>William Sept 1742, Jan 1750 that may be in Adams County because
>there is deeded transfer of land there.
>
>He married Mary (Quaker record) 1742. Mary was born 1718
>(Quaker record) and died before 1764 (she married second
>James Hamel 8 Nov 1764; his will mentions no wife but daughter
>Mary Hamel and stepchildren William Carson and Rachael
>Rodgers; Mary Hamel witnessed a will 1785 in Adams County
>and there is a marriage record 3 May 1786 of Hugh Johnson
>and Mary Hamel).
>
>It would seem that Mary was a Quaker. There is a record of
>her condemning herself for "outgoing" in marriage (I believe
>it means marrying outside the church) 2/6/1742 and a Quaker
>record of 3/3/1742 where William Carsons requests to come
>under the care of the Friends (this means, I believe,
>he joined the Quaker Church) because his wife was a Quaker.
>For those who believe that Mary was a Moore (I've seen
>no evidence), there is a William Moore in the same Quaker
>Meeting.
>
>The Children of William mentioned in the will are William
>(minor), Rachael and Ann.
>
>The son William Carson couldn't have been the child of Mary.
>She was married 1742, and the will says that William was
>16 years old (b. 1734) at the time of his father's death.
>A guardian is appointed for him; no mention of the ages of
>the two daughters. There is a deeed 22 Feb 1759 which
>is from James Hamel (2nd husband of Mary) to William as
>his inheritance. The land deeded was not the entire land
>mentioned which was Patented by William Carson 10 March
>1745 but part which was intended as an inheritance. There
>is an Administrative Bond for William Carson dated
>29 October 1789. Mentions wife Catherine, children John
>(oldest), Mary m. James Wierman, Andrew, James, William
>(Age 18 in 1796 administrative document; b. 1778), Catherine,
>and Naomi (age 13 in the 1796 adm doc, b. 1783).
>
>Ann Carson is listged as a taxpayer in Fawn Twp in the
>tax list of 1783.
>
>There is a PA marriage record of Rachael Carson and Jasper
>Rodgers 6 May 1760 in the Christ Lutherean Church,
>York PA.
>
>This family isn't mine BUT there were three Carsons who
>warranted land at relatively the same time, Walter (mine)
>definitely in Adams County PA July 1741, William listed
>above who warranted land in Sept, 1742, and Samuel who
>warranted land March 1742. I'm trying to establish a
>relationship between these three Carsons and identify
>the other very early Carsons. Unfortunately, there don't
>seem to be Tax Lists before 1780 for York County. The
>one thing I've accomplished thus far is to eliminate the
>possibility that Walter Carson could have been a Quaker.
>He and his wife Agnes were witnesses to a Quaker wedding
>in Adams County and, with William identified as a Quaker,
>it has been thought that Walter might have been one too.
>But, it seems that William joined when he married.
