thought you'all might be interested in this little tid-bit
thatwas forwarded
on another list!!!
Actually, though the message may be very interesting to most of us in a
general way, it does not further our Carson research. It really is not
on-topic on a surname mailing list.
In addition, we probably saw it already. These messages become "chain
letters" and by the time they are forwarded to half the lists here at
rootsweb (each with 150 or 500 subscribers), Rootsweb has what looks like
"spam" on its hands. Even if the message is interesting (like this one)
or useful (like the "help me find a lost child" messages we sometimes see)
it is still off-topic. The one message forwarded here had these lines
in it. With one email, it went out to 1000 or more recipients. And then
people on those lists forwarded it to other lists - and we all get it
multiple times.

While I am commenting on off-topic messages, I cannot remember whether
CARSON-L got the spam "Business Opportunities" message which made it to
a lot of rootsweb lists in the past day or two. This one managed to
get past both the "closed" lists like this one which require a post to
be from a subscriber before it gets posted - and for awhile, the spam
detector which rootsweb has in place. A reminder - if spam gets to
a list and you want to complain, the place to complain is not to the
list itself, but rather to abuse(a)rootsweb.com.
OK, back to the Carson hunt!
