Have you considered doing a YDNA test? If you're a male Carson (with surname Carson),
it can help sort out which related Carson lines (and eliminate dead end lines that are not
related).
I did the test, and it helped me in my researc. There are two major Carson lineage
groups, one being Western European (the R haplogroups) and the other being
"Nordic" (I haplogroups). Both Carson haplogroups originate in Scotland,
branches of both went to Ulster/Northern Ireland, and branches of both went to the same
states/provinces in the US and Canada. So, there are Carson families in the same county
that are not in any way closely related, as the probability of a common ancestor between
these two groups is thousands of years back.
The other dilemma is that both groups used many of the same first names for their
children.
