Hi Craig
Your YDNA will only show Y values. The Y chromosome is passed from a father to his sons
(your direct paternal line). Females don't have a Y so none of the Y data can pass to
or through a female ancestor.
The ATDNA test (called Family Finder at Family Tree DNA) is one that males and females can
do. It identifies cousins that match portions your chromosomes on segments of the 22
autosomal DNA pairs that everybody has. My test matches have helped me "prove" a
few "iffy" ancestors. The lack of cousin matches doesn't disprove an
ancestor several generations back since a child inherits c50% from each parent randomly.
That means a grandchild won't have exactly 25% from each grandparent because the 50%
he or she gets from each parent is again random. Example: My dad and sister did this test
at my urging and both matched a known 4th cousin but he and I didn't share enough
chromosomes for him to show up on my matches. My sister and I both have about 35% of our
matches that are not on the others list!
