Hi Bev and Carson folks ........
Looking for data on females in the early days in this country is FRUSTRATING.
;-)
One of my ancestors was Mary Carson. She was the wife of George Bratton who
was born in 1776. His family lived in York County, PA. His older brother
Paris Bratton had moved to Butler Co, PA. Paris and his wife Hannah Pierce are
listed as the first marriage in Butler Co -- 1800. His brother George, my
ancestor, traveled all across Pennsylvania doing work, they say in the history.
That history says his wife Mary Carson was born in 1783. The facts I have
found is that George and Mary lived in Plum Twp., Allegheny County, PA per census
records 1810 to 1850.
I have not been able to prove anything about Mary Carson's family. My guess
is that they were the one's in Butler County and George Bratton met her there
when he was staying with his brother Paris. My George and Mary Carson Bratton
ancestor's first son was named William, born 1804 -- that is the name of
George's father. Their second son was James born ca 1805 -- so my GUESS is that
James was the name of Mary Carson's father.
Here's some proof of a James Carson in Butler County:
1803 Tax List
Middlesex Twp., Butler Co., Pa.
In 1803 Middlesex Twp. was much bigger than the current Middlesex Twp. It
included the entire middle third (as divided by lines running north-to-south) of
that part of the county south of an east-west line drawn from the northern
corner of the western boundary of the County. In regards to the current
townships, this area includes all of Middlesex, Butler, Center, and Penn Townships,
portions of Adams, Brady, Clay, Clinton, Connoquenessing, Concord, Forward,
Franklin, Jefferson, Oakland, and Summit Townships, the City of Butler, the Borough
of Valencia, and parts of the Boroughs of East Butler and Connoquenessing.
BRATTON, Paris 400 acres
CARSON, James 200
CARSON, John 200
CARSON, Robert 200
And this census is also a 'maybe':
1800 census Middlesex Twp., Butler Co PA [where Paris Bratton lived at that
time]
James Carson
1 male under age 10
1 male age 45+
2 females under age 10
1 female age 10-16
1 female age 16-20 [possibly my Mary Carson]
1 female age 45+
If anyone has any thoughts about these Carson folks in Butler County --
please let me know.
