We know from evidence of letters that the Walter
Carson who married Mary Carson (daughter of Samuel
Carson/Jane Patterson) was in Camdam Dist SC in 1778.
We know from letters that he was still there in 1799.
The problem is that there are TWO Walter Carsons who
are in York Dist SC during the time when Census records
were kept. In 1790, there is a Walter Carson in York
Dist SC who has one male over 16, one under 16, and
three females. THere is a Walter Carson Jr. who shows
up in the 1800 census as having males one under 10,
one 10-16, 126-45 and females 4 under 10, one 10-16,
one 16-26 and one 26-45. This Walter Carson is the
one for whom a pension application was made by his
wife Mary on 1 March 1844 (in Clark County, Georgia).
In this pension application, it states the following:
Walter Carson was born April 15, 1751 and d. Jan 8, l829.
Mary was his wife, b. March 4, l764 and they were married
in York Dist. SC by Joseph Hoaw, a JP for that district
on March 24, 1780. She died Jan 24, 1848. Their children
are listed:
Susannah b. July 21, 1782
Abel b. Nov 2, 1784
Jane b. Sept 10, 1786
Mary b. July 14, 1790
William b. June 20, 1792
Rebecca b. May 13, 1794
Elizabeth b. Aug 17, 1796.
Salinah b. July 24, 1800
Martha b. Sept 7, 1802
Walter b. Aug 20, 1804
James Franklin b. Oct 5, 1813.
In 1850, when son Walter filed for after the death of his
mother, it staes that there were only five chidlren
who were heirs of his father (Mary, Rebecca, Martha,
William and Walter) meaning the others were dead by that
time?
The second Walter Carson in York Dist SC in the 1790
Census is listed with one male over 16, and three females.
In the 1800 Census, he is listed as having one male over
45, one female over 45 and one female under 10.
There isn't any evidence by which to demonstrate which
of the two Walter Carsons is the brother in law of
William (son of Samuel/Jane). If someone has evidence
of the birthdate of Mary Carson daughter of Samuel/Jane,
and it isn't March 4, l764, this would provide a way
to distinguish. If anyone has evidence that Walter and
Mary were or were not married before they went to SC,
this would be a way to distinguish since the Walter and
Mary of the pension application were married in SC.
There are also other Carsons in York SC in 1790 -
John, Samuel and Thomas. Thomas has one male over
16 and 8 females. Samuel has one male over 16 and one
under plus four females. John as two males over 16,
three under and four females. In the 1800 Census,
there are four Johns, one Robert (probably the son
of William), two Samuels and one Thomas.
THOMAS: He has one male (himself) and eight females in
1790. In 1800, he has one male over 45, one female
over 45 and 8 other females. Anyone know of a Thomas
Carson with 7 or 8 daughters and no sons?
SAMUEL (1): has four sons and dive daughters with male/
and female over 45
(2): has four daughters and three sons with male/
female 26-45 (obviously younger)
There is a record of Thomas and Samuel Carson being sued
in April 1787 in Yorkville SC which suggests a relationship
between the two. The younger of the Samuels could be the
oldest son of William Carson.
I've no ideas at all about the four Johns of 1800 or the
one John of 1790 since that isn't a name that appears with
either Walter or William.
Anyone have anything in the way of evidence/proof to
attribute either Walter to parents, or sort out the
other Carsons?
