Adam Smith 21 M born Pa living with Henry Gregg and his family. Their
daughter, Emily, is 18 - she became Adam Smith's wife.
1860 Census Allegheny County Jefferson Township
He and Emily are married and he is listed as a farmer. His personal property
is valued as 75. He and Emily have 3 children, Siras J. 8, Amelia 5, and
Nancy J. 1. Emily's brother, Samuel Gregg is living with them. He is 25 and
a miner.
Thisfollowing story was told to Uncle Bob Laughlin by our grandma Nancy Jane
Smith Laughlin. Adam Smith, her father, wanted to join the Army during the
Civil War but the government wanted him to keep raising wheat for the
soldiers. Nancy Jane said she remembered seeing the soldiers coming over the
hills on their horses to cut the wheat and her family sitting up long tables
under the trees and filling the tables with food for the soldiers to eat.
