As noted in prior email, William is a son of Samuel Carson
and Jane according to Samuel's will. He is in SC in 1978
and, according to letters from William to his brother Walter,
has four sons (one died age 11) and five daughters and is
in poor health in 1802, with his brothers Francis and Walter
dead by that time. There is also specific mention of the
oldest son being named Samuel who was an adult in 1799.
There is only one William Carson listed in the 1790 York
District Census. He has 3 males over 16, one under 16 and
five females. This has to be William son of Samuel and
Jane. There is the one son who died before they came
to the Carolines (from letter) and one female missing,
who was probably married by this time.
In the 1800 Census, there is a William Carson Sn with one
make 16-26, and one over 45 with one female 16-26, one
26-45 and one older than 45. The William Carson Jr listed
has one male under 10, one 26-45 with one Female under 10
and one female 26-45. Given two sons in 1790 who were
16 or older, this William Jr. must be the son of William
Sr. There are no other Williams in the 1800 census of
York District.
There is a will of William carson dated Oct 16, 1801 Abbeville
Dist. SC, proved April 3, 1802. A wife Margaret is mentioned
plus sons Robert (who has a son William), and William. Daughters
are Jean Carson, Martha Hearst, Margaret Patterson,
Elizabeth McGouch and Mary Patterson. Missing is the oldest
son, Samuel. This has to be the will of William, son of
Samuel/Jane.
There is an assertion (LDS) that Mary H. Carson m. James
Patterson 1801. James Patterson appears in the 1800 Census
of Spartenburg (which is the township in York of William
Carson). There are two daughters at home 1800, one 16-26
and one 26-45. In the will, all daughters but Jean are
married in 1802. It is probable, therefore, that Jean
Carson is the 26-45 year old in the 1800 censu and Mary
the 16-26 year old.
In terms of birthdates for the sons, 2 sons listed in the
1790 Census as 16 or older had to be born before 1774.
One son under 16 means a birthdate of 1774-1790. If one
of the daughters was married by 1790 (one daughter is
missing from the 1790 Census), then she would have been
born 1769 or before (assuming 21 at age of marriage). THe
youngest child died before the came to the Carolinas and
he was 11; they arrived by 1778 (Tax List shows William
and his four brothers in law there), so the youngest child
would have been born 1757 or before.
If this is true, then the marriage of William and
Margaret would be 1756 or before and William would have
been born 1735 (assuming marriage at age 21) or before.
Does anyone have proof/evidence of any of these dates?
Or marriages?
