It isn't correct that all NC was at one time in Buncombe County.
Without
getting into too much detail, there were early NC counties along and near the
coast long before there was a Buncombe County. These moved, disappeared, and
changed in name and/or location through the years, and newer counties were added
as the frontier moved westward. For example, at one time Rowan County, near
the center of the state, was the fartherest west and, theoretically at least,
had all the land to the west ot it. Jumping ahead a few years, Burke was added
to the east and took up all the land to the west, including into Tennessee
and, theoretically at least, even farther. What is now Buncombe County was then
in Burke County. When Buncombe came along, it probably had all the land to
the west of it, until newer counties were formed.

Washington, co, Tn. 1790.
He died in 1790 in said co and left WILL. Check it out. Phillip
