Hi Gary. As I understand it, all of Western NC was at one time included in Buncombe Co.
until it broke down into smaller counties. It's likely that your David never moved
but that the county just changed. Like David, my William's father James was also born
around 1765. I have a rather substantial book on the Dillinghams and related families of
Buncombe Co. The surname CHASTAIN is listed three times in the index. Under the
descendants of Thomas F. Dillingham, I find a Vesta Pearl Dillingham who married Rev.
Edward George Housley. Their son Ervin Juan (called Joe) married Edithe CHASTAIN in 1922
in Etowah, TN. There is also a Laura Blanche CHASTAIN Bell, b. GA, (probably around 1905)
under the descendants of Alfred B. Dillingham. Also under Alfred B. is a Nancy G. Morris
b.abt. 1846 who married a Benton CHASTAIN but no information is given about him. Under
the name QUEEN and in the descendants of William Dillingham, I have Ellen Elizabeth
Mullinaux, b. 1896, who marri!
ed "Mr. Queen." Under Thomas F. Dillingham descendants, I have an Etta Mae
Edgins b. about 1915 who married a " Mr. Queen." Not much help, I realize. I
have some Crawfords as well but all born after 1900. If you want them, email me direct
and I will give you the information.
I think your David is probably a brother or first cousin to my William's father James.
I believe James' wife's name was Sarah but do not have confirmation. The only
children I know of are James, John, and my William (b.1793), all of whom stayed in
Buncombe Co. Beyond that, I only know of William's marriage to Peggy Dillingham and
their descendants. I will hold on to your information and let you know if I come up with
any definitive connection and would appreciate it if you would do the same.
