Obituary of Samuel CURSON, Angleton Times, Friday, August 28, 1908,
Angleton, Texas
Aged Citizen Passes Away.
Columbia, Texas, Aug. 26, 08.
Died at his home in this city on last Wednesday, Mr. Samuel CURSON, at the
ripe age of 77 years. Mr. CURSON was born in Dervinshire (sic), England,
Sept. 1831, lacking only a few days of reaching that age.
Mr. CURSON with his family sailed for America in Aug. 1872, and landed in
Columbia about the first of August following. Mr. CURSON has lived
continuously since in Columbia. By industry and economy he lived
comfortably, and raised to manhood and womanhood 5 boys and 2 daughters,
all of whom with mother survive. All the boys are married and one daughter,
who is now Mrs. PREWITT and lives in Itasco (sic), Hill Co. Your
correspondent has known personally and continually the deceased for 23
years. Mr. CURSON was a good man and citizen, temperate in his habits, kind
and gentle in disposition, jovial, a kind and loving husband, indulgent
father, and a friend to everyone. He was a true christian and a consistant
member of the M. E. church for 35 years. His faith in God his savior was
deep and steadfast, for in all his suffering when it was all over he often
said how there was sweet rest in that Heavenly home which I am nearing day
by day, as I know it will not be very much longer with me heere and as the
days grow fewer in number the way grows brighter. When it can be said he
was a kind and loving husband and father, a good neighbor and citizen, what
more could we wish. The large crowd who followed the body to its last
resting place in the beautiful West Columbia cemetery attested the esteem
in which he was held by this entire community. The sympathy of this entire
people goes out to the bereaved wife and children. One by one our older
ones are passing down the valley.
A FRIEND.

*Note: These obituaries say Samuel was born in 1831, however bible records
say he was born in 1833. If he was 77 at his death, the year of his birth
would have been 1831. I do not yet have his baptism records from England to
confirm his birth year.

The following report of Samuel's condition prior to his death was also in
the newspaper. He died on August 19, 1908.
The Angleton Times, Friday, August 21, 1908, Angleton, Texas
Mr. S. CURSON, who has been quite feeble for the past several months, it is
reported, gradually growing weaker. His son Albert came in from Houston
today and will remain several days at home. Mr. CURSON is among our oldest
citizens, being 72 or 73 years old, and came to Columbia some 40 years ago
direct from England.
