(William Joseph Carson) - Bill -Born November 25, 1899 in Bracebridge.
Although Carson was a fine hockey player, his inclination was toward education more than
it was to the NHL. He attended the University of Toronto and played on the Varsity team,
winning the Allan Cup in 1921 and staying in OHA senior hockey while finishing his
studies.
Carson stayed in the game for a few years, playing in Grimsby and Stratford and earning
the admiration of the St. Pats, precursor to the Maple Leafs. He joined the St. Pats and
NHL full-time in 1926-27, the year the team was sold to Conn Smythe and the name change
made.
Carson had impressive years of 16 and 20 goals with Toronto, but midway through 1928-29 he
was sold to Boston and helped the Bruins win their first Stanley Cup just a few weeks
later.
Carson played one more season with the Bruins, then more or less retired to go into
dentistry, the result of his studies at the U of T.
(Francis Reginald Carson) - Frank -Born January 12, 1902 in Bracebridge.
One of three Carson brothers to skate in the NHL, Frank was the middle between older Bill
and younger Gerry. He established himself by playing senior hockey in Startford for a
number of years before the Montreal Maroons signed him in 1925-26, and just a few weeks
later the team won its first Stanley Cup.
Carson stayed with the English Montreal team for two more full seasons before winding back
in minor pro, the Maroons no longer feeling he could make a contribution. But his career
was by no means done.
He made it back to the NHL in 1930-31 with another defunct team, the New York Americans,
but then was traded with Hap Emms to Detroit for Tom Filmore and Bert McInenly. His three
years with Detroit were his best statistically, and he retired in 1934 to pursue a
coaching career.
(Gerald George Carson) - Gerry -Born October 10, 1905 in Parry Sound.
The last of the hockey-playing brothers, Gerry was the baby on skates, five years younger
than Bill and three younger than Frank Jr. Gerry also enjoyed the longest NHL career of
the three and began after just one season of Pro with Philadelphia in the CanAm league.
His first NHL year was 1928-29 when he played for both the Canadiens and Rangers and had
the distinction of going the entire season without registering a single point. His time
with the Rangers was as a loan, so he returned to Montreal for 1929-30 and helped the team
win the Stanley Cup.
Carson was back in the CanAm league, though, for the next two years before rejoining the
Habs for four full years, but his career was interrupted when he suffered a serious
off-season knee injury and missed all of 1935-36 recovering. Feeling his abilities would
be seriously compromised, the Habs traded him to cross-town rivals Maroons, and it was
there Carson played his final year of pro, in 1936-37 before retiring.
