Thanks Frances.
I was told that there were alot of Carsons who were Scots. I am still looking for my
g.father James Robert Carson, b. Phoenix, Arizona abt 1875. His father (also JRC) was said
to have come from Ireland, but I think I will have to start looking in Scotland. Its only
a row boat away - on a fine day 8-))
Cheers,
Jane

Actually, both the English and Irish Carsons originated in Scotland - in the South-West
around Galloway. According to a book I purchased about ten years ago (The World Book of
Carsons) I estimated it contained about 25,000 names at that time and the largest
concentrations were around Glasgow and Kilmarnock. The name has been found in Scottish
records as far back as the 12th century. There was a family in Galloway by the name of
Carson, but they died out in the direct line around the time of James V1.
I think many of the Carsons in England went there in the late 18th, but mostly the 19th
centuries. My great great grandfather moved to Liverpool in the late 1840s from
Dumfries.
