Hi -
I took over CARSON-L when the original list manager was no longer
managing it. My Carson surnames are peripheral - not in my direct
line - so I don't post actively about the surname. I don't mind
managing the mailing list, however. If there is anyone else who
really wants to do that, just let me know and we can transfer control.
Otherwise I will continue.
I felt I should write now, though because there are some changes at
RootsWeb and new lists and Genconnect boards. Go to the RootsWeb
page at
http://www.rootsweb.com and follow the "Resources" link
up near the top - and look under C for Carson. Look also for any
variants of the surname - there may or may not be some.
If anyone wants to manage any of those, please do sign up for them.
If not, some rootsweb staff will do that. I probably don't have
the time to do them justice as I have other duties right now.
If you take the Genconnect boards, consider asking me about taking
the mailing list, too. Having all the resources under one person
may be a good idea, though it is not necessary.
If you receive the RootsWeb Review, you may have seen their big
announcement about the new Resources Clusters where one can look for
a surname, and find all places on RootsWeb where the name may occur.
In setting this up, they have decided to create a cluster for every
surname which has a list - with a complete complement of GenConnect Boards
and mailing lists for all the surnames which are currently represented
on the RootsWeb surname list, and which are currently covered by mailing
lists. The goal, I believe, is to have these for EVERY surname so that
a new person can come in and find the name they want - spelled the way
they want - and be directed to the correct resources. I've looked at
it, and it ought to work that way if the links to "correct resources"
are done right.
The first thing you will notice when you look for Carson, is that
there may be lists/boards for any variant spellings. This is confusing
a lot of people and on some lists you may be hearing some anger and
panic .... but not here. Not yet, anyhow. I think it may be a great
addition .... I;ve had 10 new subscribers to my Edmondson list in about
24 hours since I mentioned EDMONDSON-L on the new Edmonson and Edmiston
guestbooks. It may be coincidence - but maybe not.
I am not quite sure how the mailing list situation will work out.
It seems a bit unreasonable at the moment to USE mailing lists for
each spelling that is now using Carson-L since the list is really not
that busy. However thay can exist - and new subscribers could be
switched over (or offered the opportunity to switch). The idea
is not competition - it's cooperation and getting as much information
as possible. I'm sure it will fall into place.
I think separate Genconnect Boards for the variant spellings may be
useful as it is just a method of sorting and search engines will find
the all the messages anyhow.
There are some neat new things on the Resources page for each name.
.... look at the Calendar! You can put reunions on a Carson calendar!
And birthdays! It is really nifty! There is also a guest book for
each surname.
Keep reading RootsWeb Review, and go to
http://www.rootsweb.com/ and
look around for explanations and follow the "Resources" link.
At the moment there is a lot of confusion among listowners, and I know
that the folks who keep RootsWeb running are working day and night to
get everything up and organized. Right now are a lot of new lists and
boards being formed there. The amount of information being provided at
RootsWeb is wonderful - and in additon we have the new LDS site, and
many other places we can do research. It's overwhelming!
