I am looking for help filling in the blanks on this list of names, and in
making connections with others researching the same lines. If anyone needs
more information than what is posted here, please feel free to e-mail me.
My William Carson (I) was born near Glasgow, Scotland, sometime about
1770-1790, and married a "Miss Robertson" before emigrating to Inverness,
Canada (no province given -- the only Inverness I found on a modern map is a
small town in Nova Scotia). Their son William Carson (II) was born in
"Inverness,
Canada" in 1819. Sometime thereafter, they moved to St. Paul, Minn. where
William II grew up -- one of six children. The old Carson house is where
the University Club is in St. Paul -- on the bluff on Summitt Avenue.
William I may have run away to Canada with his bride and appears, according
to one source,to have run away to Canada and then to have joined his older
brother in Wisconsin before coming down the Mississippi River to Burlington,
Iowa. I have no information on the brother. William (I) is identified on
his son's death certificate as F. William Carson -- the only place I have
seen this.
William I died in Inverness, no date given. He spent most of his life in
Inverness and in Quebec, according to a biography of his son.
William II died in Eau Claire WI Jan-4-1898. He came, according to one
source, to the Wisconsin Territory in 1838. He spent most of his life in
and around Eau Claire and Eau Galle WI, and was heavily involved in the
timber industry. He was also active in the Democratic party and the
Congregational church.
William II married Mary Smith (d. 1887 in Prairie Du Chien, WI, date not
given in my records). They had 6 children (believed to be in the following
order):
Mary Carson -- see below
Virginia ("Jessie") Carson -- No further info in my files (just the name)
Belle Carson
Kate Carson
Frances ("Fanny") Carson
William Carson (III) (b. Nov. 9, 1859, d. July 5, 1932)
Mary Carson married a Major (first-name-unknown) McGraw. Family legend says
he was a Medal of Honor recipient. The only McGraw to receive a Honor
within the right time frame was a Sgt. Thomas McGraw, of Co. B, 23rd
Illinois Infantry, earned on 2-April-1865 at Petersburg VA, and awarded
12-May-1865 (Info on Thomas McGraw from National Medal of Honor Museum,
Chattanooga TN). Mary Carson married Major McGraw at Ft. Snell (no state or
territory given -- possibly Wisc., or Ft. Snelling, MN).
Belle Carson married Robert Hager (no date or place in file) and they had 1
child, Robert Hager Jr. (no date given).
Kate Carson married (first-name-unknown) Long (no date or place given) and
they had one child, Carson Long (no date or place given).
Frances ("Fanny") Carson married Charles W. ("Will") Lockwood (no date
or
place given) and they had 4 children: Mary, Virginia, William, and Frances
("Frodie").
William Carson III (Nov-9-1859 to July-5-1932) married Louise A. Cook
(Jan-12-1862 to Dec-22-1952) on March 4, 1885, probably at Burlington IA
(they are my Great-grandparents). They had two daughters: Dorothy Carson
(Aug-11-1892 to Dec. 1987) and Louise A. Carson (Nov-20-1897 to
Nov-23-1989).
Dorothy Carson married Philip Bracken Fleming (Oct-14-1887 to Oct-6-1955) on
December 14, 1914, at her father's home in Burlington IA. They had two
children:
Carson Fleming (Oct-4-1919 to Apr-4-1983) and Jocelyn Fleming (b. January
19, 1921)
Louise A. Carson never married and had no children.
Carson Fleming was my father. He married Audrey Barclay Edmonds
(Mar-28-1926 to Feb-11-1992) on June 4, 1948, in New York City. They had
three children:
Philip Bracken Fleming II (me), b. Mar-28-1950
Louise Carson Fleming , b. Sept-5-1951
Audrey Barclay Fleming, b. May-30-1955
Some other pieces of information:
The Carsons of Burlington IA belonged to the Congregational church, and I
have photocopies of their church registry.
There is a Carson Park, on an island in Half Moon Lake in Eau Claire, WI,
given "by the heirs of William Carson" in 1914. There is also a reference
to a stone entrance to the park being built with money given by Mrs. Jennie
Carson McIntyre, daughter of William Carson, in 1937. I don't have
"Jennie"
in my database -- although this might be "Jessie" whom I do have. William
Carson was also listed in 1892 as one of eight millionaires in Eau Claire.
A researcher who sent me over 20 pages of photocopies from Eau Claire also
sent a lot of references which I would have to research on-site.
This is probably more information than you wanted, but I am providing it in
the hope that the Minnesota and Wisconsin data may provide a link of some
kind.
Best wishes for the New Year, and happy hunting.
