Hello...I am new and posting for the first time and apologize if my
first query is too broad. I'm hoping that maybe someone has a link with
my family of E TN/NC/GA, or that maybe it rings a bell in your own
various researches. Trying to avoid a wild goose chase before I really
get started, since so little is known about these lines. Here's what I
have so far:
My ggggrandparents were Drucilla HOLLAND and James CARSON, in
Cocke Co TN at least from 1836 to just prior to the Civil War. Both were
born in late 1790's, according to census reports in TN but other info
shows NC. In Cocke Co, Drucilla was widowed sometime prior to 1836,
owned land and had some assets and both married and minor children at
that time.
The only document I have is an 1837 Cocke Co. TN circuit court
record of estate adjustments for James, which shows Drucilla in
co-guardianship of her minor children with a John HOLLAND, who I believe
to be her brother (they appear in neighboring proximity on census and
tax reports up to 1850). Several of their adult children, CARSONs, also
appear in the same census group with their families up to this time.
Records are confusing as to birthplace both for
Drucilla, James and their children. We have seen references to Haywood
Co, NC listed as birthplaces, but I haven't been able just yet to
establish Drucilla or her children in either GA or NC. There are many
HOLLANDs in both places, and these areas were heavily settled by
Cherokee families.
Our family knows that some children & offspring went to
the Chattanooga TN and Walker Co and Stone Mt GA areas, known Cherokee
settlements, in 1850 and later, supposedly in part to escape to mountain
safety before the war broke out.
I'm hoping to put more information from others with the
little I have so far, to substantiate our link to the Cherokee
communities and hopefully match family legend to fact...I have found
HOLLANDs listed on several early Cherokee rolls but wanted to share my
information with you before looking further. Perhaps someone, a
relative I haven't met yet, has already covered this ground. I welcome
any comments, questions, information you have and will gladly share what
I have collected so far. Wado, thanks...."Que tsi"
