Hi, Carson folks. I thought this group might appreciate (or even enjoy)
this obituary I found of my great-great grandmother on a newspaper
microfilm. It's from the Greenfield Republican, of Greenfield, Highland
Co. Ohio on 4 February 1926.
It's written in the extremely florid style of earlier times, and almost
makes you want to weep. Keep in mind I knew absolutely nothing about her
until I read this. I will paste the text of the obit below:
Sarah J. Kilgore was born in Adams County, April 18. 1841, and departed
this earthly life January 25, 1926 at the age of 84 years, 9 months and
7 days.
On January 25,1858 she was united in marriage to John Carson and for
forty years and a few days, had the pleasant company of a true and
loving husband. The husband and father proceeded her to the eternal home
February 16th, 1898 , there to join five of the thirteen children who
had received the call of the Master to come home.
Left to mourn a really wonderful mother are the following children:
Marcus L. Carson, Charles Carson, Martin L. Carson, George Carson. Mrs.
Wash Chain, Mrs. William Cooper, Mrs. Jane Chunn and Mrs. Josephine
Black. George and Martin reside in Los Angeles, Mrs. Jane Chunn in
Seattle,Washington, and were unable to be present.
Grandma Carson, as she was familiarly known throughout this vicinity
will be greatly missed by every one who ever came in contact with her
pleasing manner. To know her was to love her, and forty grandchildren
who have always looked forward to a visit with Grandma will miss her
earnest endeavor to make them happy when in her presence. Grandma Carson
took great pride in having lived to see five generations and looked upon
her great grandchildren, who number sixty as her own.
Pages of praise would not suffice to tell the many sacrifices Grandma
has made without one word of complaint, during her active life no day
was too severe, no night too dark, for her to leave a comfortable
fireside and administer to those in need.
Rich or poor were all received in her home alike, she lived a true
example of the precepts as inoculated in the sermon on the mount, and we
can learn a great lesson from such a life as Grandma lived.
At an early age she gave her heart to God and joined McColm Chapel
Methodist Church in Adams County, and during these many years has lived
true to her conviction that God has prepared a home for each of us, who
would give Him an opportunity, and her later years she felt His care and
His promise to comfort all who were willing to walk with Him.
She perceiveth that her merchandise is good; her candle goeth not out by
night.
