Hi Josette,
You've probably seen postings about William Carson (father of Lindsey
Carson) and his cousins coming to NC, which was based on writings by Calvin D.
Cowles from 1935. Cowles descends from Lindsey's brother Andrew Carson. The
text (see below excerpt) seems accurate as far as locations and names are
concerned. I've found all of the individuals mentioned except was stumped by the
reference to the Andrew Carson married to Elizabeth Cates. Moses son Andrew
married Elizabeth Hannah that same month/date in Washington TN. A James
Carson in Lancaster PA who died there also had a son named Andrew. The James in
NC next to William did not. The only Andrew moving to Washington TN was the
son of Moses. Recent findings confirm some intermarriages of the Hannah and
Cates family in Guilford NC, where Moses' son Andrew was living prior to
c1781. So, my theory now is that this Elizabeth "Hannah" was likely a Cates
after
all, marrying a second time. There were also a ton of Cates in
Orange/Caswell NC where Moses lived 1770s-1781.
The DNA of a descendant of Moses/Andrew is an exact match with my DNA....my
ancestry line was (based on findings) Robert Carson - Margaret Woods who
married 1755 Lancaster PA (through their son David Carson born 1755-65) and moved
to Rowan c1759 then in Orange/Caswell c1765. A Robert shows up in Guilford
1777-79 where a David I think is mine shows up (or that might be a son Robert
Jr). The Robert Carson in Rowan 1759-1761 had a wife named Margaret,
mentioned when they sell their land in 1780. This Robert is the cousin of
William, Lindsey's father. This Robert's brother died in 1759 Rowan NC.
I've always thought that my Robert Carson died in TN (Greene/Jefferson)
around 1800-1810 (one estate was 1806) although the Robert Carson dying in 1798
Iredell is also a fit except he only mentioned son Robert Jr in his will.
I still think your line with the Walter Carson names connects to my Carson
line a generation or two prior to NC....how exactly I don't know.
The text mentioned was "Genealogy of Five Allied Families" by Calvin D.
Cowles written in 1935. The original text was viewed by a fellow Carson
researcher recently who verified it's content. The paragraph per transcribers and
postings says:

Came across something quite interesting on the internet, published in the
New York Times
November 4, 1895. It was an interview with the sister (Mary Carson Ruby) of
Kit Carson.
In that article, it states that her father's name was Walter Lindsay Carson.
Walter Lindsay
Carson was the eldest son of Samuel Carson m. Eleanor McDuff (Iredell County
NC), he
inherited land.
Walter is an unusual first name for Carsons. Walter Carson who married
Agness, lived in
what became Adams County PA, is documented. He initially appears on a tax
list for
Londongrove, Chester County PA in 1729. Samuel Carson m. Jane Patterson was
on
the tax list for Londongrove in 1725 as well as following years. We have
docuomentation
that there is a blood relationship between Walter m. Agness and Samuel m.
Jane, but
whether they are brothers or cousins, we know not.
Seven of the children of Samuel m. Jane went to the Carolinas in the early
1760s, David
Byers m. Margaret Carson, William Carson m. Susannah, Elizabeth Carson m.
Abraham
McCarter, Mary Carson (daughter of Samuel m. Jane) m. Walter Carson
(circumstantially
proven son of Walter m. Agness of Adams County PA), Jane Carson m. Samuel
Corry,
plus two daughters who married in NC James Rankin (Hannah Carson) and James
Duff
(Agnes Carson). They were initially in NC, then ended up in York County SC
(except for
Rankin and Duff who were in Guilford).
Walter Carson m. Agness had sons John Carson m. Mary ? (possibly McFarland).
John
sold land in what became Adams early 1779 and moved initially to York County
SC,
then Rutherford County NC. He had a son Walter Carson who married Mary ?
presumed
Henry (moved to Jennings Indiana). Walter Carson who married Mary Carson
daughter
of Samuel and Jane moved initially to Mecklenburg NC, then York SC. He had
a son
Walter who married his first cousin, Mary Carson, daughter of his brother in
law William
Carson m. Susannah in York SC. (people get these three Walters confused
because they
all married a Mary). William Carson is documented to have moved to the
Carolines by
1783, but I've never found him. The timing is right for William m. Eleanor
to have been
a son of Walter m. Agness, land obtained early 1760s. Naming his first son
Walter
is a dead giveaway.
As one other clarifying note, there is an Agness Carson who marries Matthew
Dickson.
This Agness Carson most probably is the daughter of Walter Carson (son of
Walter/Agness)
and Mary Carson (daughter of Samuel/Jane). She would be the sister of
Walter Carson
who marries Mary Carson (daughter of William/Susannah). Walter and Mary
(daughter of
Samuel/Jane) undoubtedly had other unknown children who went with them to
the
Carolinas.
For the recond, Walter and Agness of Adams Ct. PA had a daughter Agness
Carson who
married Henry Maxwell (they stayed in PA). After Braddock's defeat, there
was a migration
down from the frontier areas (west of Lancaster county) to the Carolinas.
Married
children of Samuel m. Jane Patterson migrate initially to York/Cumberland
PA. Henry Maxwell
is in what became Franklin County along with his brother in law Walter
Carson. David
Byers, Abraham McCarter appear on documents in York. Then the whole troop
except for
John Carson son of Walter/Agness migrate to the Carolinas. Land documents
NC/SC
are all early 1760s, including William Carson m. Eleanor McDuff.
