Hi Phillip,
There were 5 David Carson individuals in Washington, Greene and Jefferson TN
in the 1780s-1790s. I wish some more male Carsons who descend from those
eastern TN Carson would do the YDNA to further sort these out. I descend from
David Carson born 1755-1765, and my YDNA results match a descendant of Moses
Carson, of the same Carson group from Lancaster PA (David Sr., William Sr.,
Moses, Robert and probably John and maybe a Samuel, Alexander and James).
Below what my findings indicate so far about these 5 David Carson
individuals. Of course, nothing can be proved 100%. This information is probably only
of interest to the Carson lines from PA, NC and eastern TN.
Gary
David Carson #1 born 1730s married Sarah Woods 1753 in Lancaster PA and
moved to Washington TN 1784 along with Moses, William and possibly others. A
Robert and John are in Green 1783 also. Deed records prove this is the same
David in Orange/Caswell NC 1778 (he arrived there 1765 from PA). This oldest
David had children named Margaret b1754, Mary b1756 (both baptized in Lancaster
PA) David Jr. and probably Elizabeth (married Thomas Bell Guilford NC),
Robert (witnessed Thomas Bell's will 1790 Washington TN) and some others.
David Carson #2 is David Jr. He shows up for the first time in 1787 in
Washington TN (so born c1753-1766 if his mother was Sarah Woods) and appears to
be the son of David Sr. Apparently, he is the David who buys 253a in 1792
from James McCord with another David Carson witnessing because David Sr. had
100a before and after until he sells it. David Jr. appears to be the David
listed as "widower" in 1794 with 253a. In the tax list that year are David
58a,
David 100a (David Sr based on other records) and David "wdr" 253a.
David Carson #3 is "Little David Carson" listed in c1796 tax list in
Washington TN with 250a . He appears under that name just once (with David 58a,
David Sr 0 acres, David Jr 0 acres), so he seems to have assumed the 253a of
David Jr. David Sr. had sold his 100a but there is no record that Jr. sold his
to anybody. In later lists, the one with 250a is listed as just David again,
and he later divides the 250 with Robert Carson (125 each). So, either
Little David stays in the county, or he leaves, and David Jr. resumes the 250a.
The David that remains dies in 1811 (widow named Hannah). In 1810, prior to
his death, he sells 140a and 112a (252a), suggesting its the 253 acres of land
purchased 1792.
David Carson #4 is a what I call plain David who buys 58/59a in Washington
TN from Robert Carson of Greene TN and sells the land 14 Dec 1798 and leaves
that area soon after. This David with 58a appears to be the son of William
Carson/Margaret McCord (May 1790 road orders show William had sons named David
and Robert). William and Margaret (married 1760 Lancaster PA) had children
William Jr., David, Robert, John, Jennet and Mary. Evidence suggest this
David with 58/59a (in the county 1793 - Dec 1798) is my ancestor born 1755-65
since my David had children born in TN in (Catherine 1795, Ambrose 1798 and
daughter Jane both June 12 1799), he had a brother named Robert (whose son
Shadrack came to live with him c1820), he sells the land to John Webb whose
brother was a neighbor of David's father-in-law Matthew Patterson back in
Rutherford NC 1790, and various other evidence.
David Carson #5 was in Greene TN (later Jefferson) and administered the will
of William Carson 1787 Greene TN (widow Sarah) along with John Carson and
the widow Sarah. It was witnessed by John Carson Jr. and Alex. Gilbreath.
William bequeths to "my wife and son" without mentioning a name. However, this
David was likely not a son of the William dec'd 1787 because in William's
will he says, "I appoint My Trusty and well beloved friends David Carson, John
Carson and Sarah, My wife to be my Lawfull Executors". If they were sons or
brothers, he would likely have said so. They may have been cousins. In 1790
Jefferson TN, John Carson Sr. of Greene/Jefferson TN had 600a, David Carson
has 0 and Robert Carson has 0. In 1791, John Carson Sr had 600a, David has
100a and Robert still has 0. I think that this David might be a son of John
Carson Sr. David is not in Jefferson after 1792.
In 1797, a David Carson shows up in Blount as does a John Carson. The David
Carson in Blount named his oldest son John (per a descendant's findings).
A descendant indicates he was the one marrying Mary Burke in 1794, Washington
County TN. The David in Blount appears most likely to be the David earlier
in Greene and Jefferson, which suggests he was a son of John Sr. Other
possibilities include him being the Little David Carson or David Jr. (son of David
Sr.). There were numerous connections between David Sr. and the McCords
(some sons and daughters marrying), and quite a few are in Blount TN later and
later in AL.
Robert Carson Sr. of Greene TN seems to be related to the others in
Washington TN also. He might have also had a son named David.
