Hmmm - this is very good news for those folks in my family (now long gone) who claimed that we were related to Kit Carson. Now we just have to find out exactly how Andrew was related to him. It really doesn't matter to me if we're related or not - it's more a matter of solving one more puzzle in the tree.
If I may ask, what kind of "paper trail" do you have on Andrew and Elizabeth and any of their kids for that matter. I just can't seem to spend the time or money to go and do research so all of mine is done via what little family docs I have and the internet (the later being tragically unreliable!) Is there a way that I can get true documentation on these folks via the internet through the University of North Carolina? Any advice you could offer would be musch appreciated!

I may be able to clear up part of the Andrew Carson question. I am descended from Andrew Carson and Temperance Young through his son Andrew Washington Carson who moved to Henry County TN in the 1830's. A. W.'s property and graveyard is still in the family, and all direct line descendants from A. W. and Margaret Allison Carson to my grandfather are buried here.
I just had a male Carson cousin take a DNA test. We did not match anyone on the Carson DNA project but did match someone on YSearch who is a g-grandchild of Kit Carson.
My paper trail back to Andrew Carson and Temperance Young is very strong with wills and even letters held at the University of North Carolina, aside from the personal knowledge of the family in Henry Co. TN. The DNA match is just another piece of evidence that Andrew is very closely related to Lindsey.
But I do not put any credence found on the web in the information back from William and Eleanor McDuff Carson. I just don't see any proof.
I am happy to share any info that could help.

You are correct...I typed in the wrong birthdate for James (Elizabeth's brother). I should have typed 1799 for his birthdate. He married Drucilla about 1817 and their first-born was also a JAMES, b. 1818.
You are also correct about Andrew's information (in the OWT tree) being wrong. My opinion is from Andrew backwards to Ireland/Scotland (in that particular tree)is questionable. Some of it may be correct...but what part??? A lot of those trees were probably copied from others who "speculated", which is obvious if you look at birthdates and places compared with marriages, etc. For example William & Eleanor McDuff Carson....parents of Lindsay/Lindsey. (From a deed, we know that Lindsay was their oldest son.) Their "children" included many Carsons born way back in the 1600's, long before they were ever married...and as far as I know, there is no record of when or where they were married. Under Moses and his wife, Sarah, was a son John b. 1710 Gallatin, Sumner, TN. TN was not even a state until 1796, and was considered NC before that and some people who lived in the Eastern area of what is now TN believed they lived in VA. I doubt there were many, if any, white people in !
the area, where Gallatin, TN in located, in 1710 on account of all the hostile Indians in that time period. There are too many errors to be an accurate tree.
It may be true, however, that Andrew was a son of a James Carson. I will not rule out that possiblity, because there was a James Carson (a tanner) in Rowan (later Iredell) County, NC about the same time as Kit's grandfather, William, was there. As a matter of fact, James Carson received a land grant on 27 Feb. 1760, and William Carson received his land grant on 21 Dec. 1761, both land grants being situated along the Third Creek (Rowan Co. at that time).
Thanks so much for letting me know about the Carson tree site, and giving me a chance to discuss this with you.

It did not give an unambiguous result so it is being specifically tested and
is in the works right now. It will be posted to the Carson project when the
results are in. We are the William descendant, currently the last Carson
listed on the results page.

You could look try to compare them by hand. I'd be interested in adding the Kit Carson descendant results. Being so popular, I'd be willing to add those into the results chart by hand.
Here's the current Family Tree DNA results list for y-DNA. Some have pedigrees and they are on the Patriarch page.

Yes, it will be interesting to see what haplotype Kit Carson had. Suzie's test needed an extra test for that (complimentary) and I think you might have too, Marilyn. Some haplotypes are just less common, I guess.

The easiest way is to have a test that had been uploaded. But I wonder if
you could take the numbers from the test as listed on the Carson DNA project
site and see if they match anyone else. I have never tried to check anyone
else's results unless I was checking them against my DNA tests.

Something doesn't make sense to me. Your info shows that Elizabeth's brother James (who married Drucilla Holland @ 1817) was born in 1818. It seems more likely that he was born prior to 1800 don't you think?
And looking again at the info I found at http://trees.ancestry.com/owt/person.aspx?pid=43391826# it is obvious that the info on the Andrew shown as Elizabeth, James and Robert's father must be off by about 20 years since it shows that he was born in 1798 and that he married 2 of his supposed wives before that date.
So the story continues to be confusing and yet again as clear as mud!

Excellent info and most appreciated. I have found many of the sources that you have identified but never knew about James Carson and Drucilla. Using that as a starting point I discovered a Robert Carson whose parents were apparently an Andrew Carson and Judith Nichols. Here is a link to that info on Ancestry.comhttp://trees.ancestry.com/owt/person.aspx?pid=43391826# and I'm wondering if the parentage of Andrew could possibly be correct? What are your thoughts?

The ANDREW CARSON who married TEMPERANCE YOUNG was the brother of KIT CARSON's father (LINDSEY/LINDSAY). (Kit's grandfather was WILLIAM CARSON.) I do not know the parentage of Andrew Carson (father of the Elizabeth in your query). It is possible he was somehow related to the family of Kit Carson. I have been told the same thing of my ancestor, and I have also been told that my gr-gr-grandmother was related to ANDREW JACKSON CARSON (who was a nephew of ELIZABETH CARSON in your query), but I have not learned the connection yet.
I am passing along information I have collected as well as some I received from kind fellow CARSON researchers. Elizabeth CARSON (who married Stephen HUFF) was the daughter of ANDREW CARSON (who drowned in the Nolachucky River, Cocke County, Tennessee, about 1820, according to information found on the Internet). His 3 children were: James, b. 1818 (m. DRUCILLA HOLLAND); Elizabeth b. ?? (m. STEPHEN HUFF), and Robert b. @ 1798 (m. REBECCA HUFF). I have no positive identification regarding Andrew's wife, but have been told it probably was JUDITH NICKLES. 'Tennessee Marriages to 1825' (found on ancestry.com) shows three (3) ANDREW CARSON marriages: (1) to ESTHER STONE 05 Aug 1808, Blount Co., (2) to JUDITH NICKLES 04 Nov. 1795, Jefferson Co., and (3) to ELIZABETH HANNAH 11 Nov. 1790, Washington County. I am inclined to believe Judith Nickles was this Andrew's wife, since their descendants includes two (2) JUDITH CAROLINE CARSON individuals. Also that marriage took place !
in Jefferson County from which Cocke County was later formed.
Elizabeth CARSON (dau. of Andrew) married Stephen HUFF, who was b. @ 1796 in Greene County, TN and died 1870 in Cocke Co. The following information is a quote from Worth S. Ray's book 'Tennessee Cousins' (section on Cooke County, TN).
"Stephen Huff later married Elizabeth Carson. He was the grandson of John Huff, who had settled in these 'Dutch Bottoms' when they were a part of Greene County, before even Jefferson County had been established. The Huffs built a fort for the protection of themselves and their neighbors from the hostile Indians. Elizabeth (Carson) Huff was the daughter of Andrew Carson." Another quote from 'Over the Misty Blue Hills: The Story of Cocke County, Tennessee' by Ruth Webb O'Dell, p. 269 NOTABLES OF COCKE COUNTY, 'History of Tennessee, Bioglraphical Sketches of Cocke County,' Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1887. "Capt. A.C. (Andrew Carson) Huff was born in 1819 in Cocke County where he has since resided. He is a son of Stephen and Elizabeth (Carson) Huff, his mother being a daughter of Andrew Carson, who was one of the early settlers, and an exemplary man."
Elizabeth Carson Huff's brother, JAMES CARSON, married DRUCILLA HOLLAND @ 1817 in Cocke Co., and their children were: (1) JAMES CARSON, b. 1818.(2)ANDREW JACKSON CARSON, b. 16 Mar 1820, d. 20 Oct. 1860, Sevier Co., TN., m. Mary C. WILLIAMSON. (3) ADALINE DRUCILLA CARSON, b. 22 Apr 1822, m. THOMAS LEE BROWN. (4) THOMAS CARSON, b. 1824, m. SARAH (unknown surname). (5) ELIZABETH CARSON, b. 1826. (6) (JUDITH)CAROLINE CARSON b. 20 Aug, 1828, d. 1902, Knox Co. TN. m. VALENTINE S. JACKSON. (7) ROBERT CARSON, b. 1829. (Cocke County was place of birth for all these children, I believe.) (The 2nd Judith Caroline Carson was a daughter of # 2 above, Andrew Jackson Carson.)
I hope this information has helped clear up your confusion about Elizabeth, daughter of Andrew Carson, and has added to your information about some of her Carson relatives.
If you have information to share with me, I would be most happy to hear from you.
