Phillip,
A group of Carson familiess moved from Lancaster PA to Orange/Caswell NC.
These included William Carson (married Margaret McCord 1760), David Carson
(married Sarah Woods 1753), Moses Carson (married Elizabeth Hannah), Robert
Carson (married Margaret Woods 1755) and possibly a John Carson (spouse unknown)
too). Moses, David and William moved to Washington TN 1780s. Robert may
have also moved. Along with these Carsons were some other Woods, Strain,
Mitchell, Hannah, Mebane in-laws from Lancaster. I think some Pattersons also
moved from PA to NC with the group.
Findings indicate William Carson was my ancestor, and DNA tests show that
I'm an exact match with a descendant of Moses. I think David, Robert and John
are also blood related.

Sandy,
Centre County PA is right in the middle of the state. If your John Carson
was born in 1855, then his father James Carson who married Sarah Edmonston was
likely born 1800-1830. Most of the Carsons in PA arriving prior to 1800
came to Philadelphia. They seem to initially cluster in the counties in that
part of the state or in DE, then they migrated west from there. The name James
was in several early Carson lines including mine. As you probably notice,
the Carsons weren't very creative in their names..using the same ones over and
over (James, John, William, Samuel, David, Robert, Alexander, George being
common)
I'll keep my eyes open for your James and pass along anything I come across.
Thanks,
Gary

When would your James Carson ancestor have been born (and died) and in what
PA county would he likely be pre 1780?
I stopped researching in PA around the 1780s since my direct Carson line had
moved from Lancaster PA to Orange/Caswell NC by then.
My line seems to include a group of Carson brothers or cousins born 1730s in
Lancaster PA (Paxtang area) including William Carson, David Carson, Moses
Carson, Robert Carson and possibly a John, Alexander, James and Samuel Carson.
A Robert dec'd c1766 Cumberland PA may also be related (goods and chattels
from his estate were deeded to Moses Carson per another researcher...haven't
found that record myself). A Thomas Carson born 1740 who moved to Washington
PA is also connected to my line based on DNA results.

Peggy,
Here are some notes from my Lancaster PA research regarding George Carson
who sounds like yours. These were from books at the Clayton Genealogical
Library in Houston. I didn't write down the names of the books.
Gary Carson
1776 George CARSON, Joseph Sherer’s Co (1779 both in Capt John Rutherford
Co)
12/1/1777 proved 2/3/1778 John CARSON Paxton Twp, exec Richard and George
CARSON, children Richard, John, George, Jean, son-in-law James Wilson.
According to an ancesoral file at FamilySearch.org, George Carson b. Abt
1748, Lancaster, PA; d. 1797, married Jane Murray. However, there is no source
listed.
This same file lists his father as John Carson. Again, no source.
George's son is Robert Carson b. 3/1787 Dauphin Co., PA d. 5/12/1867
Carsontown, PA (founder of Carsontown).
Is anyone able to clarify which John Carson this is? Would anyone have
information on Jane Murray?

To go further back, you'll need to look into church records, land records, wills, etc., since census records don't include spouse and children's names prior to 1850. Hope this info helps.

I see Hugh S Carson, born in IN, in Richland County, IL in 1850 and 1860 with many children, married to Eliza, born in KY. Could be him in Edwards, IL in 1840 and 1830. No other Carsons in that county in 1830, unfortunate.
Hugh Carson m Eliza Higginson on 30 Mar 1830 in Edwards County, Illinois. Also a Elvira Carson m Moses Thomson on 8 Mar 1827 in Edwards, likely a sister, could be another family to follow.
Sorry I cannot find Hugh's parents. I would look to will lists for Indiana in hopes of finding something there. Perhaps land or will info in Edwards or Richland County, Illinois might give a clue to where he was from.

Here are some Hugh Carson individuals I've run across near my Carson line in
PA and NC. He is too old to have been the one in IL. However, the first
name "Hugh" was relatively rare among Carsons during the 1700s.
