I am trying to find a William Carson who signed the wedding bond for a John
Reed and a Margaret Carson in Guilford Co. NC late 1700s. Do you have any info
on this William.

I am interested in a William Carson line that came from Scotland, lived in
Canada (particularly "Inverness, Canada" in the early 1800s, then moved to
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and later, Burlington, Iowa. I think they were in
the timber business in Canada, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Are any of you related to a Carson line that ended up in Canada?. My great
aunt corresponded with a cousin in Pennsylvania when she was alive (around
1960//70)- unfortunately I don't know the particulars and when she passed
away no one thought to keep her address book.

Douglas,
I thought that the first Carsons in Lancaster/York and Chester PA arriving 1720-1750 might be brothers or cousins. Alexander is somewhat unique. The name appeared later in eastern NC. The more common repeating names in PA (first and second generations) were Samuel, John, William, David plus James, Andrew and George for males and Mary, Margaret, Janet/Jane, Sarah and some others for females.

Over the years I have obtained two descendancy charts for Alexander Harvey
Carson. One says he was born in Scotland and was William Carson
grandfather, while the other one says he was born in Ireland and was
William's father. When you look at both it appears that nearly every PA
Carson was related to him in some way. I'm don't say that William wasn't
descended from him...I just have seen any proof. I have a couple pet
theories I have been considering: 1) Why was William's eldest son named
Lindsey? I suspect their is a connection to a Lindsey family in his near
ancestry. 2) there appears to be a connection to a Black family (name not
race). Good luck with the PA Carson's. They are quite a handful!

Douglas,
I've found multiple Carsons with the same first names in those areas of PA 1730-1770 (maybe a half dozen Williams so far). I was astonished at how many Carson families there were in addition to the "famous" ones.
I guess we all can't be related directly to Kit Carson.

Jerry,
Which line is your Carson ancestor? If you can help with any research for PA, that would be great. I'm working under the assumption that my David Carson ancestor born 1760-65 was born in PA and that came to western NC by 1780-85. After marrying, he was in eastern TN 1790-99 (probably moving their with his parents and wife) then back in Buncombe NC by 1800. Findings suggest he was a son of William Carson and Margaret McCord who were married 1760 Dauphin PA by Rev. John Roan. Here are some questions and challenges related to PA:
1) I'm wondering if the Robert Carson who married Margaret West 1755 and the Mary Carson who married a John Lee 1759 in Dauphin PA and by the same minister (Rev. John Roan) who married William and Margaret are siblings of William.
2) If the older David Carson who appears on Lancaster PA tax lists in 1750-51 is a father of these 3 and/or if that David died in PA and left a will or intestate record in Lancaster or Dauphin.
3) If the David Carson in the Cumberland PA Tyrone Twp tax list 1778 died in that county about then and left a widow Sarah and sons David and John. The tax lists suggest that is the case because the widow appears, then another David in 1779-1780. I'd also like to figure out if he is the same older David who was in the Lancaster tax list 1750-51.
4) Rev. John Cutherbertson in Lancaster PA baptized Mary Carson and Margaret Carson 1754-1756, listed as daughters of David Carson. He also baptized numerous McCord children whose father was with our Carson line in eastern TN. I'm wondering which David was their father.
4) I'm trying to find any record of a David Carson (born marrying a Catherine Patterson around 1786 -1789 in PA (might have been in VA or NC).
Any information or hints would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Gary Carson
I noticed you mentioned Carsons in Virginia---I have Henry Carson born 1720
with sons Isaac and William born 1742 and 1743. Isaac was in Augusta Co. Va
and had children Jane, Abraham, Mary and Agnes. Not sure if Henry was in VA.
but may have been. Any of these look familiar? Jackie

Douglas,
I wish that I (or someone else) could prove you wrong about Alexander Harvey Carson, but I don't than that is likely. (None of my Carson generations have used the names Alexander or Harvey. They were big on David, Joseph, William, James, and Samuel.)
My next project was to focus on Abingdon, VA to find more info on my scots-irish ancestor, David Carson (b. 1741?).
But, I see that some readers would like to identify the Carsons in Colonial Pennsylvania. I happen to work in the Capitol complex in Harrisburg. I don't have a lot of time to give, but I would be happy to look in the state library or archives for Carson-related items that you identify.

I have a bit of bad news for Carson researchers. I am skeptical that the Samuel Carson of York Co., PA is the brother of William Carson of Rowen Co., NC. The supplement for McClungs book (3 times larger than the original) mentions a (1753?)NC will for a William Carson, who mentions his "cuzin" William Carson as well as a Samuel Carson both of Rowen County, NC. The will mentions several others including a brother Robert and wife and daughters. I find it difficult to beleive Samuel of York PA and Samuel of Rowen NC are the same individual. Of course the "cuzin" William Carson of Rowen NC is the grandfather of Kit.
Not to ad insult to injury but I have never seen a proof that Kit's granfther William is related to Alexander Harvey Carson...in fact I haven't seen any proof Alex exists. Please prove me wrong!

Gary,
I do not know who are the parents of David Carson of Abingdon, Washington Co., VA.
I have read the Carson - Bent - Boggs material (see below), but I could find no supporting documentation for the claim that my David Carson is the son of the Samuel Carson who left the will in York Co., PA.
I am pretty sure that I have accurate information on the descendents of the David Carson of Abingdon, VA. (For an overview, go to www.theRadkes.com and click in Carson Family Reunion.)
